So if you read the below you learned that I recently found an article on People: Style Watch September magazine issue on "10 Fall's Must-Haves."

1. RED:.. lots and lots of red
2. Luxe Pony Hair:
3. Southwesterrn Prints:
4. Feminine Mensware: Yes Please!
5. Chunky Cable Knits: No way! Do I want to look like my grandma?
6. Heeled Loafers: Amen!
7. Longer Dresses: Do I want to look like a nun with my 4'10" stature?
8. Metal Chokers: You got to love 90s fashion!
9. Structure Bags: Isn't this year round?
10. Dual-Tone Jacket: Only if I find one I love!

So I ran home to see how many items in my closet fit these categories. Why did I do this? Because I wanted to come in to a new season realizing that I already have a lot of the pieces. That I don't need to go off and meet this "demand". Then of course to challenge myself even more, I put them all on at the same time, well except for the southwestern print tops I have.

I was happy to get the chance and the time to play with my future fall clothes. What is so ironic about everything is that as I was putting together and outfit, I was sweating like crazy. It was horribly hot yesterday plus I have a major sun burn on my back because it in the 80s this weekend. If had been months since I had time to play with my closet and put together an outfit. I have missed it. And I have missed you all!

I am also more than happy to say that I have one of the best finds in the world. Dramatic enough for you? This vintage Fendi circa late 80s maybe early 90s from a second hand store! I know that this purse will be my new go to purse this fall and winter season. Do you guys agree with this list of things the "it" things for this upcoming fall?

2011 fall fashion must haves

As most of you know we live in San Diego, California. So you probably imagine us with short shorts, flip flops, a beautiful tan, roller blades, and sun tan lotion in my purse. Well sorry to break it to you, but that is not the case. Due to our hectic realistic lives we barely have any free time, hence the lack of posts in the past months.

Thankfully today we (as in my boyfriend) decided to wake up early and go enjoy the beautiful bay we have about 10 minutes away. Once he said this, I ran to my pile of old magazines I have been wanting to read, I dusted them off, and placed them in our beach bag next to my secret stash of chocolate covered almonds. A wonderful man, the most loving dog, beautiful San Diego weather, some time off, fashion magazines, iced coffee, the bay and last but not least chocolate. Can you say perfection?

One of the magazines I brought with me was the September issue of "People: Style Watch." I know it is no Vogue or Elle, but I do like this magazine because it has 65% of items that are reasonably within my price range, as in comparison with Vogue which my be more like a 2%.

Flipping page after page of super boring and mediocre outfits by over rated "celebrities" such as Kim Kardashian, or Vanessa Hudgens, I spot something interesting;a small article on this 2011 fall fashions. The article is calld "Top 10 Fall Fashion Trends."

I found this "check list" a bit interesting. Not because of the actual 10 points they has as the "it" fashion trends, but because of two reasons. Number one: I live in San Diego and we don't experience other seasons as much as other places, so to propose wearing a fur coat with rain boots on a 80 degree October night sounds a bit crazy. And second, I don't like to follow rules. So to read that these are the things that will be cool these next months makes me want to go the opposite way. But what if I don't do that anymore? What if I actually play with them instead?

These next couple of days I will try my best to play with the top ten fall fashion trends, which I will list in the upcoming posts. I am thinking about doing this for this next week and see how many I can incorporate into our local demographic. Stay tuned!

my dog ate my homework

Ladies... I have failed myself, my bank account, and you! Due to many reasons and explanations, I had to stop my 30 challenge. I must say it was more like a 30 for 20 challenge.

Excuses including:
1. My dog ate my homework
2. I had a flat tire
3. An elephant attacked our home
4. I ate something bad
5. I left my iron on
6. I have a doctors appointment

Alright... you get my point? Well I wish that all of the excuses above were true but they are not. I must say that thankfully I do have a good explanation for stopping:
1. The heat in San Diego got so bad I could only wear about 4 things out of my 30 items
2. I noticed that the majority of my 30 items were more work appropriate than a summer day appropriate.
3. I am also went out of town to Cancun for vacation for over a week so I would have not been able to complete it.
4. Two of my items that were on my list are not fitting me because I swell up with the heat! I KNOW how horrible!

So I want to consider that a pause maybe? I will continue the challenge starting today! BUT I need to switch the two items that are not fitting me: these anthropologie belted trousers and these olive target shorts.

day 15 and on top of the world

Can I just begin by saying that I feel eight feet tall with this maxi dress. I have had this HUGE admiration for maxi dresses and skirts. So big that I had purchased two maxi dresses and a maxi skirt in the past 3 months. Haven't worn any of them till this day. Just like every girl under 5'6" I too was afraid of looking extra short or just plain out ridiculous. But boy was I wrong.

It has actually been so unbelievably long since I have felt this great about myself. As I had mentioned due to stress I had gained many many wonderful carb-filled pounds, but today all of that doesn't matter anymore.

I think that I almost felt limited to exploring my style "fashionably" with the extra weight, but this morning I just said to myself FUDGE IT ! Of course I had to translate into blog friendly grammar. I feel limitless and may I also say lenghtless. I am on a roll right now, world beware!

day 14 my lucky number

The number 14 has been my lucky number, ever since I was a little girl. I believe it became my lucky number because my best friend and cousin, Adrianna, was born on the 14th. Since we were best friends growing up, I felt like I was showing her my admiration by making her birthday my lucky number . From there on I think I got too lazy to change it.

Due to the fact that today is my "lucky" day I would love to share with you guys something. I am one of the luckiest girls on earth. Not because I am 7 feet tall or because I have million designer bags (both unfortunately untrue), but because I have been blessed with some amazing people in my life. I have a boyfriend who adores me for who I am. I have a cousin Adrianna who I have literally gotten the opportunity to grow old with. I have friends who can make me cry out of anger, laughter, and sadness. I have a family that is full of diversity and great morals

I also have to share about how lucky I feel for becoming the person I am today. Well I don't know if that is all based out of luck, but a combination of genes and experience. Well I am lucky to have my genes and to have experienced all of the good times and the bad times, and that at the end I have had all of these people by my side. Today I feel lucky!

anthroholic winner

Yesterday morning I received an awesome email from Kim from Anthroholic letting me know that I have won an amazing necklace from Pree Brulee (see Anthroholic post here). My excitement was as high as when a child finds out about a trip to Disneyland specially because I have never really won before. Nor do I enter competitions that often because I am never the person that wins. But when she posted about this competition she was having, I saw this necklace featured and it was immediate love at first sight.

The funny part is that a couple of days before Clara and I were extensively talking about statement pieces and how much I love big colorful statement pieces. I sent her the link to this same necklace becuase I was so smitten with it. At the end of our conversation I added it to my cart with the intention of purchasing it, but got distracted at work. A couple of days later I receive the great news. Of course leave it to me to respond to Kim's email with "is this some kind of June fools prank?" I can't wait for this necklace to arrive and I can't thank both Kim and Pree Brulee for this amazing gift! What a great start to my week.

day 13 stuffing a sausage

Can I blame this outfit on a tremendous case of the Mondays? I struggled and struggled and struggled on trying to wake up this morning after a super busy weekend. I even forgot I only had limited access to items in my closet due to this 30 for 30 challenge. Frustrated and asleep, but happy to be awake enough to exit my home with actual clothes on.

Alright now can I blame this outfit on my boyfriend? I was hurried by my honking boyfriend who was waiting for me in the car, with the engine on. I don't know if I have shared the good news with all of you, but my boyfriend was able to get offered a job at my current work, so he gets to see my beautiful face all day long. I know, poor him! Which also means we get to carpool every morning.

So this is my 6:00 in the morning outfit, aka a mess! The funny part is that I even asked my boyfriend for his opinion and his response was " it looks great." Raise your hand if you have hear that response wayyyyy too many times? I am 100% sure he said that in order for me to hurry up and get my butt in the car.

Maybe I should give a 2 word explanation for why I am not so proud of what I am wearing; stuffed sausage. Both my skirt and my corset top are a bit tight and tucking one tight piece under another tight piece isn't exactly the smartest thing to do. I do love the color combo of the to and skirt, but hate the jacket with it. It makes me look a bit frumpy which is the last thing I need! Maybe a different jacket would be better? What do you guys think?

This was my crazy running around outfit in preparation for Clara's surprise birthday. She has been such a wonderful addition to my life so I wanted to put together something special for her. It was a lot of fun and thankfully everything turned out just great! The weather was just amazing and thankfully the company was even better!

I am exhausted from all of the running around that I really want to keep this post sweet and short. But I want you ladies to give Clara a big shout out because it's her birthday on Tuesday!

day 11 the little black dress

So this is the second time I wear this little black dress from Leifsdottir in this challenge. I don't know if you all remember but I hate wearing black. I love to see this beautiful women in the fashion world with countless balck pieces. Why can't I believe like one of them?

Even when I came out in this dress my boyfriend says, "but you never wear black." And of course I had to explain to him that that is the reason I am doing this challenge. So that I can actually take some of the great pieces I have in my closet out for a spin. I actually have already felt more comfortable with the idea of wearing black colored pieces. Now I need your help styling it. Any ideas?

day 10 copycat

If you feel like you have seen this skirt on our blog before, you are right! This is a skirt that Clara has been horribly in love with. I mean she could pretty much sleep in this skirt. Since the first moment she wore it I could not stop drooling. Why had I never paid attention to it at the store? Why do I have to be such a copycat?

The funny part is that we now have about 6 of the same pieces. I believe we had more before but I ened up having to get rid of some because I believed that they fit her better than they did me! Hopefully soon we will be able to do a post one piece two people styling it because we do have such different styles that I am sure we can come up with some fun and clever way to make them unique and ours.

So I do have to admit that unfortunately I did break one of the 30 for 30 rules; not to shop. But when this skirt went on sale I noticed that they were flying off the racks, so I had to get my hands on it before I regreted it. And may I say that breaking rules has never felt this good!

day 9 and counting

My excitement for the fact that it's Friday is completely off the charts! I came walking in the office yelling out that it's Friday and doing little happy dances. Why am I so excited? No specific reason other than the fact that I get to sleep in these next two days, spend more time with the two loves of my life (my boyfriend and my dog), and waste time by watching Real Housewives.

Plus I am also in a great mood because I am seriously having a blast with this 30 for 30 challenge. It's only day nine and I feel like I have already been expanding my horizons a bit more. I am now 100% confident of every piece that I have picked out the best pieces. When I first began trying to create the list of things to bring in to this challenge, I realized that the pieces I was choosing were pieces that I wear on a weekly basis. So picking pieces that I already love defeats the purpose for this challenge and for myself.

So I decided to take out more than half of my items and added pieces that intimidate me in the morning when I am picking out an outfit. I have chosen a wide variety of items that have accumulated dust throughout the months. I also have a couple of recent purchases that I am so excited to explore!

Ah, this dress. THE dress. The dress that started it all. I heart this dress. But to be honest, I haven't worn it in ages! And this cardigan from last week - it got no love for a long time and now, it's gotten to come out two weeks in a row!

Would you believe that this big, beautiful pendant came from Michaels? As in the craft store. Yup. I was browsing around a few months ago, it caught my eye and I fell in love with the color ... so much so that I hoarded it away and didn't allow it to see sunlight again until now. I think it's the perfect summery color so I plan on giving it a lot more love. This is me brainstorming other ways to wear it. ;)

Wednesday, Day 10:

Wow. Seriously, this outfit is just about all neglected pieces! I think the only thing not completely neglected is the shoes and a couple of the bangles!

First, this dress. I found this beauty back on one of my first shopping trips with Midory. She took me to Buffalo Exchange and I hit the second-hand-store-jackpot finding several awesome pieces, including this dress. It's the perfect LBD. I can dress it up, dress it down, it's comfortable and it's got pockets. I mean really, what more can you ask for? It was practically brand new and I think I bought it for like $15 ... for Michael Kors. Oh yeah. When I first got it, I was wearing it like every week so I set it aside and told myself to branch out and wear other things. I think I took myself too seriously because I haven't worn it in ages! I've forgotten how awesome this dress really is - it's kinda like rediscovering a new friend. This cardigan makes another appearance from Day 2 while this belt is new, from a few weeks ago. I haven't worn it yet, so I'm saying it's a neglected piece.

This necklace was a new purchase from Target many moons ago. While I loved the design, I couldn't figure out how to wear it. Most of my tops and dresses apparently have v-necks so the round shape of this necklace didn't work with them. But of course, my perfect little LBD works perfectly with it. I got a lot of compliments on it so I'm glad I finally found a good outfit for it!

Has anyone else jumped onto the bangle bandwagon like I have? I mean seriously, I need them in like every shape, color and size. I love to stack a bunch of random ones up (like I did here) - it feels so eclectic, light and fun.

Pun alert pun alert! Hi everyone. How are you? I'm peachy! I know, that was horrible! I am glad that I didn't decide to become a comedian. Instead I decided to become an architect because I love the design aspect of me field.

Unfortunately due to the economy ther are no jobs in my field, nor in other fields to state the facts. I decided to expand my job searching and ended up accepting a position as an administrative assistant in an engineering firm about two years ago. Best decision I could have ever done.

It's funny because in our office we have about 70 employees, but Clara myself and our friend Mandi are the only ones that dress up as colorful as we do. I also like to think that we are the biggest goof balls there (hence the pictures above). I am actually pointing at my pants because they are long and I feel like I am 7 feet tall in them! These wonderful mile long pants and this beautiful comfortable peach blouse are my new additions for my 30 for 30 challenge. I'm nearly caught up - Yay! Thank you, dear readers, for sticking in there and being patient with me. We are finally into this week.

Sunday, Day 7:

For Fathers Day, I wanted to be comfortable and yet cute so I came up with this! I'm seriously crushing on this skirt. I saw that it went on sale this past Tuesday and I'm totally out of my price adjustment period - something that usually makes me sad. However, not with this skirt! Since I bought it in early May, I've worn it at least 5 times and I feel amazing in it every. single. time. Even Hubby likes it which is unusual enough in itself, but even more so because when I first bought it, he really didn't like it.

Aside from the great fit, I adore all the colors in the skirt. I mean really, is there any color that wouldn't go with this skirt? I think not!

So, I know you're thinking that if I wear this skirt so much, what's my neglected pieces for Operation Utilize? Well, first, this top. I bought it on highly discounted at Target a while ago but haven't worn it much because I'm not really a green person. I own several shades and really like olive shades, but it's just not a color that I reach for. But, I'm loving how it looks with this skirt! I feel like it compliments the skirt while still allowing the skirt to be the star. The other star - and the other neglected item - is this necklace.

I bought it at Forever 21 a while ago because I loved the bright coral color but I honestly have only worn it once or twice before. As I was wearing it this day, I got a ton of compliments on it, so I think it'll definitely have to come out more often!

Monday, Day 8:

The neglected piece in this outfit is definitely the dress. I bought this dress about a year ago and have only worn it maybe 2 or 3 times. You can't tell here (at least I hope not), but without a belt, seriously looks one like huge sack. It has no shape whatsoever. And, it's a little short on me. I knew all this before I bought it but I loved the colors and pattern. Plus, it's silk and I got a good deal on it so I bought it anyway and figured I'd make it work. I think I need to buy a slip to wear underneath it, a la Anthromollogies. Anyway, the times that I've worn it before, I paired it with red accents (as I like to do with everything!) so I thought I'd switch it up this time and go with yellow ... and I really like how it came out!

I actually almost wore yellow shoes too but I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone and go less "matchy-matchy" (as Midory would say). So, I decided on grey shoes. I seriously adore these shoes. I almost didn't buy them but I'm oh so glad that I did. I mean really, who can resist these adorable big bows?

I'm getting closer to being caught up! I hope you're enjoying all Operation Utilize outfits so far. I know I am!

Up to day 7 now and its still pretty easy! Should I knock on wood now? I haven't really had a hard time pairing up things, but I have had a hard time not wanting to grab something else from my closet. You know what the weird part is? That I would have never put this cardigan together with this dress.

As a matter of fact, I think I have only worn this super soft Loft cardi about two times. I thought that the cardi complimented the blue tones in the dress very nicely.

But I wont lie, I even felt it was a bit flashy for me and believe me when I tell you that that never happens. EVER! But my next challenge will be to try to tone down the dress a bit so that I don't look like a walking highlighter! Scroll down to see Clara's post today.

This top is definitely a neglected item. It's so comfy but I feel like it's not very flattering on so I don't wear it very often. I decided that in honor of Operation Utilize, it had to get it's day in the sun!

And, in typical Clara fashion, I had to add some red. I loves me some red accents.

Saturday, Day 6:

Pants: The Limited

Hubby and I actually loafed around the house all day long until we met Midory and her man for dinner so I just threw on something casual and comfy. I typically would not have shared an outfit this mundane (as you can probably tell by my equally mundane facial expression) but for this challenge, I will. The top is new (got it on sale!) but the cardigan and the shoes are my underutilized pieces. I love the color of this cardigan, but I feel like it's too long and too casual for work or most other outings, so I really only wear it when I'm being super casual. But while I was wearing it, I really loved how soft and comfy it was, so I think it'll have to come out more often for a spin!

These shoes also are not ones I would usually blog about, but they are definitely neglected! I bought them at Target years ago and like the cardigan, only really pull them out when I want to be super comfy and casual. They actually are pretty comfortable, I love the light grey color and the little fringe I think just gives them that little extra "something".

I don't know about you ladies, but I believe that there is no bigger influence of feeling feminine than a wonderful dress.

I received the most beautiful compliment from a lady I don't even know: "You in that dress makes me want to smile." She continued with telling me how she loved the color combo and the color blocking effect of it. She also said that the dress looked perfect on me. I do kind of agree. Not on the fact that I look perfect hahahah but because I do again believe that the actual fit flatters my body. Unfortunately I was not able to get a good picture of me standing because the sun was setting and we didn't have any time left.

It's funny cause even my boyfriend asked me "why are you adding that dress to your 30 items, when all you can do is wear heels with it?" and I responded with "my point exactly!" I chose this dress for the challenge aspect. Because in these next 30 days I want to be able to wear this dress atleast 4 times with different styling solutions.

How am I going to style this differently? I have not one single clue, but I can't wait to wear this dress again and maybe make another person smile!

Okay, so things have been busy. Crazy busy. I've been keeping up with Operation Utilize and have been taking pictures, but haven't had time to post anything. So I'll go through my backlog and break it up over the next few days.

Wednesday, Day 3:

Dress: Target

Earrings & Ring: Anthropologie

This dress is another "why don't I wear this more often?" moment. It's a beautiful, versatile, basic black dress and I never wear it! I got it for a steal at Target last summer and have only worn it once since then! Go figure.

On this day, I decided to pair the dark black dress with light, pinkish tones to make it more summer appropriate. This is the first time I've worn this melon colored cardigan (hence all the fluff and lint it's shedding onto my dress!). It's from Cotton On and I must admit that I own several of their cardigans. Whatever colors they decide to make them in, I buy. They're super soft, v-neck (my preference in cardigans), long sleeve (also my preference) and they're only $20. They are a total score in my book!

And check out my new jewelry set from Anthropologie. I have had my eye on both of these beauties for a while so when they went on sale, I had to snatch them up quickly! I'm so happy that I did - I just adore them!

Thursday, Day 4:

This outfit is full of completely under-utilized items. First, this cardigan. I got it from Old Navy ages ago and have only worn it a handful of times. Partly because it's very thin so it's only practical on warm/hot days and partly because of the color. It's really bright which is out of my comfort zone. But, I like the color a lot so I'm trying to push myself beyond my own boundaries.

Next, this top. I bought it with Midory about a month ago and just haven't worn it. I really love the colors and speckled pattern but I couldn't decide what to pair it with - again because of the bright pink dots. I ended up really liking this combo!

Last but not least is this skirt. I bought this months ago and you know, if you had asked me if I had worn it yet, I would have given you a resounding "yes" because I love navy and I love skirts, so how could I not have? Well dear readers, my confession is that when I went to go put it on, it still had the tags attached! I was shocked! I can not believe I haven't worn it at all! Wow. Shame on me! I'm definitely going to have to start showing this skirt some love!

30 for 30 backup: day 5

I would be lying to you all if I told you that I felt super confident in this outfit because I don't. I love the color combo of the floral top with the beautiful yellow tone of my skirt. I know I have a good eye for choosing and pairing fun colors, but that doesn't mean that I love how all of these pieces fit me.

I think that the issue that I have with this skirt is the fact that because of the tulip effect to the pencil skirt, there is naturally a circular edge to the front flap of the skirt, therefore creating almost more of a rounder affect.

I have ALWAYS adored this skirt since the moment I laid eyes on it. It was my first anthropologie purchase and one of my best, but I feel like I have "out-grown" it. Unfortunately during these times I don't think that this is the best fit for my body. But I have to stick to making this skirt work on this challenge because I know that hopefully I can come up with an outfit or a solution to making this skirt work.

Finally we had a beautiful weekend in San Diego! We have really been seeing too many Gray May and June Gloom days over here, booooo! But this weekend I was able to enjoy my wonderful backyard.

I am actually very happy that this outfit was so comfortable and just perfect for a casual day. I have to point out two pieces here that are just some of my favorite from my closet. First this pair of nude flats from Nine West. I am usually hesitant about getting flats because I am shorter than a second grader, plus I am so used to just wearing high heels for over 10 years now. But when I saw these I fell in love. Not only are they so adorable, but the leather is amazing on them. They are so comfortable that I had to add them to my 30 for 30 challenge.

The other piece that I love dearly is this blouse from Anthropologie. Its called the Heroine's Homecoming Top. No only is it a lovely silk top, but the proportions for me were just perfect. The flow affect makes it look so classy and romantic in a way. I ended up purchased the two colors that were available: blue and white. And I don't regret it one single bit.

I guess when I decided to do this 30 for 30 I forgot that I need to be consistent with actually documenting my journey! Well oooooppsss cause that is not happening! Thankfully I have been able to take shots of all of my outfits so just bare with me and I will post them up as soon as possible.

Plus the main squeeze LOVES them, which is super hard to believe cause its tought for him to actually LOVE something in my closet...

When Midory told me that she had decided to do Kendi's 30 for 30 Challenge, she asked me to join in with her. I know that it would probably be insightful and helpful (especially with this whole The Making of a Working Wardrobe thing), but honestly, I know that I'm just not ready. I want to do the 30 for 30 when I'm excited about it - when I truly want to do it ... and I'm so just not there yet.

However, what I have been trying to do lately is to challenge myself to wear unworn or rarely worn pieces. I have several pieces (clothes, shoes and accessories) that either I love but don't wear or that I bought but couldn't figure out how to wear. So, instead of the 30 for 30 challenge, I'm going to do my own personal challenge to wear at least one neglected (unworn or rarely worn) item everyday for the next 30 days - it'll be called "Operation Utilize: No Clothes Left Behind" ... okay, okay, "Operation Utilize" for short! (insert James Bond theme music here).

Since I'm slow and late, this post will actually have yesterday and today's outfits! You get two-for-one and really, who doesn't like two-for-one? =)

Yesterday, I wore not just one, but two neglected pieces - the shirt and one of the necklaces. While I love both, I just don't gravitate towards them. This top is one of the first pieces I bought when I was starting to create my first adult, this-is-really-MY-style wardrobe. I love the fit, the colors and the graphic print. So why don't I wear it more? Who knows!

Here is a close up of my two necklaces since you can't really see them in the first picture. There are two here - the one that is a silver chain with gold paisleys - I wear that one all the time. I adore paisleys so that necklace is totally one of my go-to pieces. However, the all gold one with teardrop crystals is one that I rarely reach for. I bought it because I loved it and saw a lot of layering possibilities but just never reach for it! Go figure. So, I decided to do just what I had originally envisioned - I layered it! I actually ended up really liking these two together so I think now whenever I reach for my beloved paisley necklace, I'll also reach for this teardrop crystal one too!

And, just because I love them so, I thought I'd show you my paisley earrings too! I actually have several pieces of paisley jewelry from the Jess, LC Diversey Collection and I love each and every one. The whole collection is retiring so be sure to grab the pieces you love. There was actually one piece that I missed out on that I'm still pining for (The Diversey Medium Solid Enamel Paisley Necklace in White if anyone has one that they want to get rid of!) so learn from me and don't wait! :(

This dress is bar none, one of my favorites. It's comfortable, I think it's a good match to my shape, it has pockets (a must on dresses for me!) and it's red - one of my favorite colors. So why don't I wear it more? Well it's one of those things where I would wear it like everyday if I could so I resist wearing it to the point that I hardly ever wear it. Go figure, right? Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either, so I'm definitely going to start wearing it more. I big red puffy heart love it.

This cardigan is one that I got ages ago on sale at Charlotte Russe. I love the color, the loose fit and the light weight fabric. However, the edge is sort of sparkly (I'm not sure that it comes through in the pictures) and I don't wear it often because I'm afraid that it can be a little "much" and not really office appropriate. Today, however, in honor of this challenge, I threw caution into the wind and wore it anyway!

Here is a closeup of my jewelry - the bangle and ring are new but the necklace is also a neglected piece. I acquired it from over a month ago from the EA Trade Market but I've only worn it once before - which actually was only last week. Actually, when I bought this new bangle, I bought it hoping that it would match the necklace, but as you can see here, the bangle is more green and the necklace is more blue. The "old" me would not have ever worn them together, but I'm trying to take more risks. Midory tells me all the time "it doesn't have to match perfectly" so here you go - I'm trying to embrace "close though not perfect."

30 for 30 day one and two

Its more than normal for me to do things ass backwards (pardon my french). Instead of strategically planning out the 30 items that I will be wearing these next 30 days, I only got half way done my "elaborate" chart. See "elaborate" and incomplete chart below:

Not only am I horrible at planning, but having to plan 30 days of outfits has been more of a struggle than graduating with a bachelors in architecture (a five year education where i slept only an hour a day). Hey atleast I was able to come up with 17 outfits with 10 things, so I think I'll be fine. So maybe we will all learn a lesson of "how not to do 30 for 30".

The main piece in my first outfit is that the little black dress. I don't know if you have noticed, but I never wear black. NEVER! But I have decided to try to break away from that because I see that some girls can do some beautiful things with the color black.

My second outfit was easier because I love both my jean top and this beautiful Anthropologie skirt. These were pieces that NEEDED to be in this challenge. Specially this red skirt, because I want to be able to pair it up with some of the tops that I have chosen, specially patterend tops! Am I a super nerd for getting excited to mix patterns?

The third item in this ensemble are the tan wedges. Everytime I wear them Clara asks me if they are new, so I am guessing that maybe its about time I take these puppies out for a spin. My only hesitation with them is that the sole is more of a felt permeable material so unfortunately my feet are not oderly pleasant. Sorry I had to share that with you guys but aren't we here for the good times and the bad times?

So so far its been easy, but then again how can it not be when its only the first days! So please bare with me if I come up with some narly outfits... And give me as many opinions as possible!

midory attemping the impossible 30 for 30

Ladies and gentlemen I am here to announce; Midory will attempt Kendi's 30 for 30 challenge. I am sure that most of you have heard of this great exercise that many lovely bloggers have practiced numerous times. Here are the basics of this challenge:

Step 1: Choose 30 items in your closet (including shoes and jackets, but thankfully excluding accessories).

Step 2: Wear these 30 pieces and only these pieces for the next 30 days creating 30 outfits in total.

The main intent of Kendi's brilliant idea was for her to get to know what she already owns. I feel like a challenge such as this is perfect for me right now for the following reasons:

1. These 7 months I have purchased over $2000 dollars worth of clothes. Let me just tell you how embarrassed I am to share with you this amount, but I feel like the more I acknowledge it the more I want to stop shopping.

2. My boyfriend and I are at a great place in our relationship and our carreer, so we need to start saving and planning for the next stages in our lives. I feel like I it's not fair for both of us if only one of us is saving (in this case him!)

3. We recently found out that our son, our dog, has cancer so I need to get rid of pieces in my outfit and reduce the amount of items I have because I would prefer to have less and have him in my life for longer.

Crazy I know, but I have never felt so ready. I would be lying to you if I told you that the idea of not shopping for 30 days doesn't scare me; because it DOES! But I have never felt so ready specially because it will be fun to share it with all of you! I hope you guys can join me in this fun journey! I can't wait. 30 for 30 starts TODAY!

Now, I can't take full credit for this cute and colorful pairing. I got the idea from this picture from the Anthropologie website:

I saw the picture when I was drooling over Brickwork Tee and the color of that skirt reminded of this fuchsia colored skirt that I already had in my closet. I was so taken with the color combination, I just knew that as soon as I bought the top, this outfit would be my first pairing!

I didn't have a belt that I thought looked right with the outfit so I chose to wear the necklace instead. Pairing mint with fuchsia is a little out of my comfort zone, but I think they ended up working well together! I was able to obtain this little beauty from the EA Trade Market. I previously had both the other colorways but sold them because they were just too bold for me. I really wanted this colorway and am thrilled to finally own it.

And by the way - you have to check out these cutie cut-out nude wedges from Target for yourself! While I adore Target clothes and designs in general, I had sworn off all Target shoes a few years ago because every pair I bought was so uncomfortable! But lately I have been reading so much on fashion blogs about people buying various shoes of theirs and loving them, so I thought I'd give them another try. I walked around the shoe section a few weeks ago and ended up buying 3 pairs of peep toes wedges! Out of them all, I think these are my favorite. The cutout detailing is beautiful, they can easily be dressed up or down and the nude color of course goes with anything! And they are pretty comfortable too - I mean I wouldn't want to stand in them all day long but for my usual mostly-sitting-sometimes-walking-around job, these last me the whole day! At first, the peep-toe part right around my toes was really tight, but I just shoved some rolled up socks in there for a few days and it stretched out nicely! For $30, I think they were a great buy - I can see these getting a lot of use this summer! =)

the making of a working wardrobe: budget

This has been the part of this transition that I've been wanting to avoid most. It's a scary word: budget.

EEK!

Yup, with the start of a new month (and my birthday month no less), comes a new beginning and for me, which includes the often-dreaded shopping budget! In addition to considering what's good for, and needs to be in, my working wardrobe, I also need to start considering what's good for my wallet.

As much as I don't want to do it, I know that getting on a budget will be a good move all the way around. The most important aspect for me is that I will be relieved of all this shopping guilt that I have. I mean, it's not like I'm spending away our rent or bill money - but I am spending money we should be saving and quite honestly, I know some of what I'm buying isn't a need but more of a want. And that needs to stop. Anyone else feel me? So, with a budget, I will be spending an amount that Hubby and I have both agreed upon, I will not be dipping into any money that needs to be going elsewhere, and thus, there will be no need for guilt! That's a win-win in my book!

Also, by simply being on this budget, I will be buying fewer items ... which means I'll need to shop smarter ... which, in turn, aids in the development of my working wardrobe. I will be looking for pieces I truly LOVE, pieces that really work with the rest of my wardrobe and pieces that are very versatile. These are all things I'm working towards anyway, but on a limited budget, I think these rules will become even more pronounced.

Fewer items ... smarter shopping ... no guilt. Actually, this is starting to sound pretty good!

In addition to putting myself on a budget, I need a way to keep myself accountable. Therefore, I will be reporting to you, dear readers (as well as Hubby and Midory), at the end of every month with run-down of my purchases. My goal is to spend no more than $300 every month - less if I want to do other fun things with my allotted amount (like buy crafting supplies).

It's all a bit scary but I know I can do it and with everyone keeping me accountable, I am hoping to do this long-term! Wish me luck! :)

the making of a working wardrobe: color

The first step I took in making my working wardrobe was actually pretty easy for me. I simply evaluated what colors are in my closet. My plan was to pick core colors that I love, that look good against my skin tone and that all either match or complement one another.

I pretty much have already implemented this technique simply because of what colors I'm drawn to when I shop. But I've been thinking about the colors in a new way and it’s worked wonders already. I've been mixing and matching things by color while trying to remember something Midory constantly reminds me - "It doesn't have to match perfectly." As I talked about before, I've always been a stickler about making sure that when I wear two different pieces with the same color, that the two shades matched exactly. It's a bit obsessive and Midory reminds me all the time that it's okay to not have them be the same and even that it makes an outfit more interesting. So, with that in mind, I've really opened up my outfit options just by mixing and matching different shades of the same color.

I think that narrowing my wardrobe down to a set of colors will be helpful in other ways too. I have two examples – if an article of clothing that I like comes in multiple colors, instead of hemming and hawing over which color(s) I like best, I now pick the color(s) that best fit into my wardrobe. It’s a win-win because the pieces will get more wear and I’ll be confident in my color choice rather than always asking - or sometimes kicking - myself “should I have gotten X color instead?.” And, on the flip side, if I’m shopping and find an article of clothing I love and it doesn’t come in any of my colors, I’ll know that it isn’t a wise purchase for my working wardrobe. So, it’s made shopping easier, smarter and more focused!

The other way this technique works is quite simple: getting dressed. I have found that when pieces in my wardrobe are in matching and complementing colors, it’s easier to pair them together! I’m able to easily mix and match the pieces into limitless outfits because, for the most part, they already “go” together simply by color.

So, what are my colors? I went through my wardrobe and took down the colors that I saw repeated most often. When I initially went through my closet and found a lot of (let’s call these the “core” colors):

Black

White/Ivory

Khaki/Tan

Gray

Turquoise/Teal

Red

Blue (mostly Navy)

And also a little of (let’s call these the “accent” colors):

Olive Green

Brown

Purple

Kelly Green

Pumpkin

Mustard

Coral/Pink

Like I said, this exercise was fairly easy for me since I already am only drawn only a few colors (and even then, only certain shades of those colors). I guess this exercise would be harder for those who have a greater variety of colors. Anyway, after I got my list together, I thought more about which colors go together best. I’ve determined that all the “core” colors that I already have all go together well, but that I want to add a bit more variety, so I will be moving brown and mustard from “accent” colors to “core”. I think the mustard and brown will go with all the core colors and will give me more options. As for my accent colors, they each go with most of the core colors but not all, so they will add nice variety and punch.

So, the list is revised to:

Blue (mostly Navy)

My plan is to buy mostly my core colors, a little of my accent colors and if an item that I love in the store doesn’t come in any of these colors, it’s a pass. Furthermore, if that piece only comes in an accent color, I will only purchase it if it is a versatile piece, not too expensive and something that I really adore. Not to say that those rules don’t apply to core colors, but I’ll probably be a bit more relaxed on purchases from my core color group and pretty strict on the accent color group.

I’ve got to admit that I’m excited that having a determined color palette. I’m sure that it will make both shopping and getting dressed much easier!

I don't know about you, but the sale day yesterday had me totally stoked! I was so disappointed last week, but this week totally made up for it! Two things that I have been dying for finally went on sale!!

Here's what I picked up:


Retro Rose Cardigan	Monarch Skirt


Brickwork Tee - Grey	Brickwork Tee - Navy

The Retro Rose Cardigan has been on my wish list since I first laid eyes on it. The colors and patterns are gorgeous and it is really soft. I need more pattern in my wardrobe and this cardi fits that bill! This one was a total MUST but at $118, I had to wait for it to go on sale. It was hard, but oh so worth it. I'm ecstatic to finally own this beauty!

Speaking of pattern, how about the Brickwork Tee? Nice, neutral colors, a simple print - sign me up! The colors are so beautiful in person. The grey is a sort of light, silvery color and the navy is so saturated and rich. I love the fit (i.e. they don't cling to my tummy pudge!) and they're so versatile - I can totally wear them with jeans for play or with a pencil skirt or slacks for work. Love!

As for the Monarch Skirt, well honestly, it's just "okay" to me. While I love, love, love the cut and the soft, flowy fabric, I'm not a big fan of the print. But, I bought it anyway because Hubby totally loves it. This skirt and the Sun Shades Dress are the only pieces that he's really shown any interest in, so at the sale price, I figured it was worth it.

I came across these photos and realized that I never posted them! It's from a few months ago, before I cut my hair and while it was still cold here.

What do you think of the purse? I found it on clearance at Marshalls for $30 - and it's real leather! $30 for a new, real leather purse? I'm sold. I love the design and details. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the mixture of brown and black. Well, more accurately, the shade of brown used with the black. In the picture (i.e, in sunlight), the variation and contrast looks good, but in real life, indoors, the brown is very dark and blends in too much with the black so it just looks like two different shades of black which is kind of weird. I wish the brown shade was lighter, more of the cognac brown in my boots ... but hey, for $30, I'll deal! :)

I love the fit and pattern of this skirt, but it's such a challenge for me. Green just isn't a favorite color of mine. I really like olive green but that's about it - all other shades of green are a challenge for me. I bought the skirt anyway since I need more patterns in my wardrobe, but I've really struggled with it. Other than yellow and neutrals, I'm not sure what else to wear with it. Now that I'm looking at this picture and realizing that my boots are a sort of rust color, I have a rust cardigan that I think I'll pair with it next time. Does anyone have any other ideas?

the making of a working wardobe: research

A few months ago, one of my favorite bloggers, Anjali aka goldenmeans, wrote a brilliant post on A Working Closet (also known as a working wardrobe, capsule wardrobe, wardrobe capsule, etc). She made some excellent points that really resonated with me. I've been mulling over it for quite some time.

It occurred to me that one of the things that I love most about checking up on my favorite bloggers is not just looking at the new things they bought or the hearing their reviews but looking at the different ways the wore the pieces they had. Take another favorite blogger of mine, Kendi. She has several pieces that she wears over and over (like the blue shirt that I talked about in this post) but in a way that is completely different every time! I love that she really gets the full use out of each and every piece in her wardrobe by continually finding ways to make an "old" piece look new again!

Anjali and Kendi's wardrobes are working for them - not the other way around. Their style seems so effortless (though I'm sure it's not) and unique - I'm sure whittled down from all the possible options out there to the few specific pieces that are truly them.

I want that kind of wardrobe. Wait, correction - I need that kind of wardrobe. All too often, I find myself saying that I have nothing to wear even though I know that I have plenty of clothes! I get frustrated and annoyed with not only my closet, but also myself. I mean, I have a closet (technically 1.5 closets) full of clothes and I'm telling myself that I have nothing to wear? Seriously? Come on Clara! But I now realize that it's because nothing seems to go with anything else so I exert lots of time and energy trying to force outfits together.

But no more! I have decided to make myself a working wardrobe. One that goes together seamlessly so I can just work on expressing myself and creating fun, unique, true-to-me, combinations. This series will be about the making of my own, personal working wardrobe. Ultimately, the goal is for my clothes to:

a) work for me - everything needs to fit and flatter - cut, shape and color.
b) work for my wallet - I need pieces that I will wear and will continually want to wear.
c) work as a team - each piece needs to have a role on that team and get along with most other teammates (aka pieces) in my wardrobe.

I'm still not exactly sure how I'll get there or how long it will take, but I'm here to share my progress with you. I'll share what I learn along the way - as it's all unfolding to me. Are you up for the journey?

So what did everyone think of the Big Tag Sale yesterday? I will admit that I was quite underwhelmed. I was really hoping for the Retro Rose Cardigan, the Brickwork Tee, and the Media Via Belt (in red). I thought there were a lot of older items that didn't go on sale that I thought would and a lot of newer items that did. Weird. Anyway, I did end up with these little beauties though:

Salutations & Closings Heels Sun-Shaped Bangle

The Sun-Shaped Bangle has been on my wish list since it came out but I haven't actually seen it in person - no store I've been in has had it! So, I ordered it online and can't wait to get it. I adore the color, I think it makes the bangle such a statement piece while still being simple and classic.

I also trekked out to the UTC Anthropologie for a quick lunch run to scope things out and I found the heels in my size! What a nice surprise - my store doesn't carry shoes so they had to be a return! Thank you to the lovely San Diegan woman who returned these beauties so I could have them! I've admired them from afar for a while but just never pulled the trigger. I actually thought about ordering them online when I ordered the bangle but I didn't want to pay the shipping for them ... but apparently they were meant to be mine! Don't you just love when that happens?! :)

Happy Friday Everyone! I cannot express to you, dear readers, how happy this outfit makes me. (Is it weird that outfits make me happy?). The title of this post has two meanings - one, it blends the names of these two pieces, but also because it's true - both these pieces were instant desires of mine! It is rare for me to purchase Anthropologie pieces at full price. I mean, not that I don't want to, but I usually just can't financially.

Well this dress is a rare exception. I was so instantly smitten and taken with this dress and immediately envisioned it with so many things in my wardrobe, being able to be worn so many different ways, I simply could not wait for it to go on sale! It just HAD to be mine ... right away. For good measure though, I did try it on like 3 separate times just to ensure that it wasn't an impulse buy. Boy am I happy I scooped it up. I feel amazing in it!

One of the things you don't see "behind the scenes" of this blog is that when we're taking photos, Midory is constantly trying to get me to do different poses, make different movements, stand different ways, etc. I am always too shy and self-conscious to do so. I average about 3 full length photos per "shoot". But not this time! I felt so good in this outfit and loved it so much I kept moving and trying new poses. I could have stood there all day in this glorious outfit!

I didn't want to bog everyone down with too many though so I'll just give you one more.

*Happy sigh* I just love this outfit. It feels so like me and will so definitely have to be repeated!

While I toss and turn in bed every night trying to go to sleep, I always try to brain storm on what I want to wear the next day. I remembered that it's been a while since I have worn my beautiful multi print blouse from bcbg. The reason why I haven't worn is because it's definitely snug on it's on, but it's wearable if it is layered over. But a blouse as great as this won't shine with just a simple cardi, so I needed to challenge myself.

I just recently purchased this LOFT dress from a second hand store and the fit is fantastic. The style is very subtle that its a the perfect layer dress that will look fantastic with any other top or cardigan. So I didn't want to waste time on trying to play with it and what better layer than one of my favorite (too tight) tops!

Accessorising this was also a lot of fun because the colors of the blouse bring in about a million new color combos! There is this beautiful dark tan color (the color of my belt) that is on the blouse that I wanted to bring out with the belt. I also adored the fact that there was black so I can finally wear one of my favorite purses, this Michael Kors leather purse that is smoother than a baby's bottom!

I actually wanted to also compliment the black in the blouse and the purse with black super cute bootied pumps, BUT paul said, and I quote "They don't look good with that outfit because the top looks too Anthropologie and the bottom looks too Lady Gaga". Taking a cue from Midory, I have been trying to make an effort to be more bold and adventurous with my fashion choices. It is a new goal of mine to create more interesting outfits and come up with more visually stimulating and complimentary - but not necessarily matching - pairings (Kendi is a master at this!). In an effort to do so, I got a little creative with today's outfit. The "old" Clara would have worn this outfit with nude or navy pumps and silver jewelry. I'm sure it would have been cute, but it also would have been very "safe."

Today I decided to take a risk and used a technique that I typically reserve for scarves. I used this top as inspiration and pulled out colors from it into the other pieces I'm wearing. Not only that, but I took another instruction from Midory and tried not to obsess over colors not matching exactly. You can't really tell from this photo since the setting sun is casting an orange glow on everything, but while both my earrings and bracelet are shades of turquoise, the bracelet is a deeper, more saturated shade and both are a tad more blue than the turquoise color in the shirt. I know this may seem like no big deal to some of you, but I sometimes suspect that I've got a touch of OCD (with a lot of things - not just colors and fashion!) so this was a big step for me! I even did the same thing with the khaki color in the shirt vs my khaki skirt AND with the orange in the shirt compared to my cognac shoes - I mean, I just felt like I was just getting all crazy here!

Midory has been preaching to me since we met (about 8 months ago) that I have to let go of my exact-same-shade obsession but not until now have a drummed up enough courage to do it! And I surprised myself in the end because I was very happy with the way the outfit came out and felt very comfortable and confident in it and still very "me". I'll definitely have to take more "risks" like this again!

This becomes ... THIS!

Ever since I saw Anthropologie's Great Dot Maxi on Kim here, I was in love with those big white dots and the simple styling. There was just one problem: I'm not a fan of long skirts. I mean, I hold nothing against them and have fallen in love with many (I'm looking at you, Ancient Myths Skirt) and I've even read that long skirts can make you seem taller ... but I'm simply not comfortable in them. I feel frumpy and not-put-together in them. Lately, I'm trying to be rational and purposeful with purchases so I knew the only right thing to do was to push the super cute Great Dot Maxi out of my mind since I just knew I wouldn't feel comfortable or like myself in it. So, I tried to forget it.

Then, a couple weeks ago, I doing a "once-over" of the Fashion Valley Anthropologie sale room. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted the beautiful navy blue, white polka dotted fabric peeking out at me. I took a quick look to see if my size was there - it was - and then I looked at the price tag - it was on a second cut for $40!! I scooped that baby up as fast as I could! The rational, I-won't-wear-it-because-it's-long mentality flew out the window along with my money.

I brought it home and tried it on in front of the mirror. Tried it on with gladiator sandals ... with flip flops ... with wedges ... with espadrilles ... with a cardigan ... with a jacket ... with a belt ... tried it on for my Hubby ... I wore it around the house ... Still, nothing I did made me feel comfortable in it! I either felt like the dress was too "nice" for the pieces I pairing with it or I just didn't feel like "me." But I was still so in love with the cut, shape and fabric! I was discussing my dilemma in great detail with Hubby (as he attentively listened to me while watching The Daily Show), when I said something to the effect of "if only it were short" and pulled it up to my knees. Then it hit me - seriously, I think a lightbulb dinged over my head. "I can hem it!" I exclaimed (which is when Hubby finally looked over at me). So I wisked the beautiful silk crepe dress off to my seamstress as fast as my little car would take me (and considering that she's 2 minutes from my house, it was pretty fast regardless). One week and $15 later, and I had this:

I just know - for me - I will get a ton more wear out of this as a short dress than as a long one. I know I can wear this for work with pumps, pearls, cardigan or blazer or for play with sandals and chunky jewelry. The pattern, colors and cut are timeless so for purchase price and alterations, I think this was a sound investment at $55.

my coveted eight

I thought I'd list the top 8 things I'm coveting at the moment. Why eight? Well, I figured I had to limit myself otherwise this list would probably be pages and pages long! And since eight has always been my favorite number (I can't explain why), I thought it would be fitting.

This week, it just so happens that all my covets are from Anthropologie.

Sky Drops Earrings

Aren't these just the most gorgeous shade of turquoise? And I love the way the cool turquoise color contrasts with the warm gold. I can see these matching a ton of pieces of my wardrobe and isn't the color just perfect for summer? I'm trying to hold out for a sale but might give in at full price.

Sautoir Necklace

Just like the earrings above, I love the bright color, the mix of cool and warm tones and I think the necklace might match the earrings - or so I hope! While I've seen the earrings in person, I haven't seen the necklace yet. This is another piece that I'm going to try to hold out for a sale on but might give in at full price.

Apothecary Skirt

This skirt wasn't even on my wish list until I saw it in the store. Talk about spring! This skirt has such vibrant colors and a beautiful cut. At first I was sad that there weren't pocket - but then realized that they weren't the usual hidden hip pockets but rather lower down, visible pockets. And they're so cute! After trying it on, this skirt shot straight to the top of my wish list! My budget says to wait for a sale but this baby seems pretty popular. If it starts selling out, I'll definitely buy it at full price.

Figure-Eight Necklace

I tend to play it rather safe with my jewelry, so I'm on the lookout for a few statement pieces. But, I want ones that aren't too trendy and that I think will endure over time. This one just may make it's way into my collection! I love the matte gold color and though it's size that makes it a statement piece, I think the overall design and shape are timeless. While I think the $48 price tag for this necklace is fair, I don't really want to pay that for a piece that isn't as versatile so I think I'll wait for a sale.

Library Stack Necklace

As a book lover, I was instantly smitten with this necklace. It's unique, beautiful and says something about me. Even Hubby thought it was uber cool and a "must"! But, with a $168 price tag, this beauty will have to wait for a sale ... and maybe even a second cut.

Retro Rose Cardigan

While I freely admit that I love cardigans (maybe too much), I do think I need to add more patterned ones to my collection. I adore the colors in this cardigan and it is so amazingly soft. When I tried this on in the store, I pulled it over my In An Instant Dress and let me tell you - both the Sales Associates and I had an "ah ha" moment! They were perfect together! I can see this cardigan going with so much in my wardrobe - both dressy and casual! This is a total must-have for me - but at $118, it will most definitely have to wait for a sale.

Wave-Set Druzy Drops

I was able to scoop up the Columba Necklace in the grey colorway when it went on sale a couple weeks ago which I think is a perfect match to these earrings. I am totally in love with that necklace so I know these earrings will get a lot of wear. Still, I think they're a bit overpriced at $58, so these pretties will have to wait for sale time.

Winding Rope Tank

I have such a thing for anything nautical. Maybe it's from the fact that both my father and stepfather were in the Navy. Maybe it's because I'm a big water person ... I dunno, I just embrace it. This top isn't overtly nautical and it's neutral to boot? Sign me up Captain! ;) I've been looking for this one in the stores but haven't seen it yet. I can't wait to try it on!

No, I'm not talking about my husband.

I'm talking about this dress.

Don't worry about Hubby's feelings ... he's aware that it wasn't love at first sight. It was more confusion at first sight ... but that's another story.

So, this dress. It's amazing. I big red puffy heart it. When I spotted it lying on a table at the Fashion Valley Anthropologie, I was instantly smitten. Once I tried it on, it was over. Signed, sealed and delivered, I'm yours ... or rather, it's mine.

And how perfect is this necklace for this dress, right?! I bought it years ago and I simply adore it. The fact that it's a perfect match is pure coincidence ... or fate ... you decide.

And what do you think about my new haircut? I cut off like 4 inches and got sideswept bangs. I thought it was this big dramatic change but I was apparently wrong since no one (besides Midory and Hubby) has noticed or even said a thing.

to crew or not to crew

One beautiful Tuesday evening, after a long day of work, Midory so innocently decided to enter J Crew with the sole intention of returning something, and only that. But of course to her "innocence" or more like "denial" that is not what happened to 4 foot 10 Midory. She left with so much more, a special another great personal shopper experience!

A ways back (here) I shared with you all my wonderful first time at my local J-Crew in Fashion Valley. What made this visit so special was that I had a personal shopper , the fabulous Cindy Reif, that told me the truth about how things looked on me. Something that is very hard to find specially because everyone wants to sell sell sell! She helped me find two of the dresses that I absolutely love not just because they are adorable, but because the fit makes me look and feel great! This outfit that I am wearing is what I wore the day I made my return at J-Crew and the dress is what Cindy helped me pick out my first visit.

As I entered the store, I was destined to get to the cash register and out of there because my bank account has been slightly mad at me. But then of course miss Cindy was there! She is so easy to talk to and is so sweet and friendly that she is just one of those people that are so easy to talk to! She very nicely complimented me on the way I styled the dress which I was very happy about myself and then we proceeded on having a bit more fun with a couple more dresses, and accessories, and maybe even sweaters. Yep! I very successfully failed at my goal of only returning! How can I when I have a fashion guru next to my side helping me! Right?

I left with a couple of things including this belt above. Its called the Amina belt and may I say that this pictures does it no justice. When she showed it to me without an outfit I was hesitant, already ready to say pass. Thank god I didn't because the colors are just beautiful and they went so nicely with the outfit I was wearing that day. I left that store with a belt, a striped sweater, a dress and a scarf. Guilty but worth every second! I was very excited about everything that I wanted to wear them all at the same time, but people would probably stare because the colors would not go, nor the styles. But I did decide to rock my sweater the next day, and it felt as smooth and comfortable as pjs!

I also wanted to see how light thinned stripes would go with darker thicker stripes and I think it worked! It was such a fund experience that I really wanted to share.

Oh to type again! Apologies for being absent from both blogging and commenting, there has been too much distraction lately. But I am happy to say that I am back and ready to share! I don't have outfits to document, for I have barely had enough energy to even put clothes on for work every morning. I really have missed seeing everyone's wonderful accomplishments with their outfits such as Betty, laughing at Kristin's funny entries, and hearing such wonderful words from Steph! I have noticed that this blogging world has been a great and unexpected experience in my life.

Like I stated before I have not had time to blog, but I have had time to contemplate about fashion and why I love it. It was during my weekly viewing of "The Devil Wears Prada" when it all just made so much sense. During one of the scenes the main character's friends express himself this way about fashion: "Fashion is not about utility. An accessory is merely a piece of iconography used to express individual identity."

I use fashion to be able to express my individuality, but then again who am I and how do I express myself in my clothes?

I am that person who wants to take risks by challenging myself
to combine colors and patterns.

I am that person who thinks its brilliant that a designer decided
to add coin purses to an already full beautifully detailed sweater.

I am that person who feels naked without of accessories
on and who loves vintage gold (necklace my dad gave to my mom)

This week we've hit a cold snap here in San Diego (well, by San Diego standards). It's disappointing because I've recently purchased a couple of new pairs of sandals and really wanted to wear them! But, on the up side, I get to squeeze in yet another wear of one of my favorite dresses, Anthropologies Cordial Embrace Dress (also seen on me here). It's made of wool so it's very warm and cozy. I know this dress has gotten some bad reviews, mostly due to that extra "flap" of fabric in the front, but I seriously love it. I think it's basic enough to wear a lot of different ways (and I have) but still has enough presence of it's own to not get lost behind all the other pieces.

This time, I paired it with a gorgeous rust colored cardigan (another favorite of mine) and a cute wrap belt. This is actually the first time I've worn this belt even though I've had it for a while. I guess I wasn't really sure how to wear it but now that I have, I've come up with a few other ideas! I know I can't be the only one who does that, right? Puts off wearing something forever only to realize that it really is more versatile than you thought?

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for the weekend! I have some errands to run today and I get my hair cut tomorrow and then on Sunday, I think I'm going over to the In-Laws house. It should make for a busy and fun weekend. Thanks for checking in today and I hope you have a great weekend! :)

I have been gone for a bit! Work has been insane, life has been busy, everything has been madness! And to top it all off my outfits have not been fun! But while both Clara and I have been plowing away at our horribly busy jobs, we have been honored for the Versatile Blogger award by two super awesome ladies; Jenn from Complex Cardigan and Terri from The Anthropological Shopper.

So now seven awesome things about both Clara and I (even though she is not present)

1. The first time I saw Clara for the first time, she came in to the office for an interview. I didn't like her because she was not smiling. And not I can't live without her.

2. Both Clara and I have a shopping addiction. A big one! We both buy compulsively and sometimes end up returning more than half of our purchases after we actually have time to contemplate what we have just done and how much damage we have made!

3. I, Midory, still cry atleast one a week because I feel unhappy about what my body looks like. But I guess sharing it with you guys kind of makes me feel better about myself because you all have made me feel better with your lovely comments.

4. Clara gave me the best present ever for my birthday! A necklace with a squirrel because she knows that I think squirrels are the funniest creatures ever! Look below!

5. Clara has an amazing creativity side to her. She has this awesome arts and crafts room in her beautiful apartment, that can be ANY girls dream come true! She makes these beautiful cards that can make anyone feel special!

6. My dream is to be on Americal Idol, but growing up my father used to yell out "when I used to sing in the shower.

7. I am Clara's idol. :)

I cannot tell you how happy looking at this picture makes me. I mean aside from Midory's wonderful photography, this dress is the "one that got away" so to be seeing myself in it makes me happy and it's still a little surreal. Thanks to the wonderful Effortless Anthropologie Trade Market, I was finally united with this little number. When this dress first went on sale, I ordered it in my size in the red colorway and was satisfied ... until it arrived. I was shocked by just how bright the shade of red was. I mean red is my favorite color and is a major player in my wardrobe but this was not my red! I instantly returned it and went on the hunt for the navy color but at that point, the dress had been on sale for over a week and it was impossible to find. To make matters worst, the navy color seemed to be the most popular of the three offered. It was long sold out online and Anthropologe CS could not find it in my size anywhere. E-Bay had a few but at a very marked up price so I kept checking CS every week ... but every time I saw my dress on another blogger (and there were plenty of them), I seriously had a pangs of sadness in my heart. I eventually gave up and resigned myself to the fact that I would never own my love-from-afar dress. Then, while browsing the Trade Market, I came across someone with the dress in navy and my size - and even better still - it was a new one - tags on and all! Long story short, the dress became mine and Kelly from New Jersey became my hero (thanks again, Kelly!). This dress is everything I hoped for - it's a wonderful, basic dress that fits great, is really comfortable and hey, it even has pockets! I'm all about dresses with pockets!

It even goes really well with my beloved cognac INC boots and this beautiful yellow B.Makowsky purse that I found at a local second-hand store for - get this - $50!! It is as smooth as butter and just about the same shade. I LOVE this bag - it goes with so many more things than you would guess a bright yellow bag would. To the wonderful San Diego lady who gave this up so I could have it - I could hug you!

So I guess this whole outfit truly proves that one lady's not-loved item can become another lady's treasure!

Okay, first a confession - this outfit is actually from yesterday. Shhhh. I was super busy and didn't have time to post it. But I love it too much not to, so here it is! Ta da!

This is the most wonderful, beautiful, versatile Mary Shirtdress from Anthropologie. I just adore this dress. When it first came out, I couldn't decide between the green version and the purple. I loved them both but I didn't want to own one dress in two colors so I chose the green. The green seemed to match more things from my wardrobe and since it sort of has a military style, I figured green was the more appropriate color. I've worn that numerous times and started thinking that maybe I really did need the purple one too. I mean, this dress is great for all seasons - as is with pumps or sandals for spring/summer, add tights or tall boots for fall/winter (well, San Diego winter!) - and it's very versatile. I feel like I can wear easily for work or play. So all this added up to me deciding to take the plunge on the purple too. I tracked one down a few weeks ago from the Woodmere, Ohio store and it arrived last week. Imagine my surprise when I heard yesterday that it got a second mark-down to only $30! I was gladly paying $60 for this perfection dress, but an additional $30 off via a price adjustment made this purchase a no brainer and made me super happy ... so much so that I did this:

That is the "boy-do-I-love-this-dress-especially-for-so-cheap" face *happy sigh*. I paired this dress with my new mustard braid belt from the red version Triumvirate Belts - which by the way is a great deal! $48 for 3 genuine leather belts - $16 each - count me in! I had to play around with it until I got it tied around my upper waist in a way that made me happy.

And what goes better with that beautiful yellow braid then some more beautiful yellow? Of course I had to pull out the amazing Waving Grains pumps also from Anthropologie. I have some serious love for these shoes. From the gorgeous and yet versatile color to the intricate stitching down to the patterned heel - these shoes are subtle enough to go with just about everything and yet have all the details to make them a statement all their own.

As I tossed and turned last night not being able to go to sleep, I began trying to figure out next day's outfit specially because I always seam to run out of time in the morning while getting ready. Sometimes I make the best pot of coffee and then forgetting it when driving away to work.

I am the most useless person in this world, at least for three hours after I wake up. It should be illegal for me to drive to tell you the truth. Sometimes I also think that some outfits I pick out early in the morning should be illegal too.

I think in this case I might be able to argue my way out of a ticket specially because by new Banana Republic blouse has bees on it.

When looking through my closet I realized that I need to take out my beautiful Anthropologie skirt for a spin, since I had not worn it in over 5 months. I know I know how horrible to neglect such a beautiful piece. I am pretty sure you have all experience that moment where you see yourself in a picture with a piece of garment and you think "is that what it looks like?"

I think that I was having fun figuring out what shoes to pair up the neutral grays and the golden color of my skirt. Clara says that she wouldn't have paired it with that necklace, she thinks that its too much. But I guess I like the idea that the brown tassels match my shoes.

So I strongly believe that in order to be able to show off a good outfit you require pictures that will be able to express the attributes of the outfit.. Yeah well that did not happen here at all, on the contrary. I was on my own trying to document what I thought was a successful outfit, so I tried and I tried and I tried and at the end this is what happened.

Clara was too busy at work so she couldn't take a picture of me so I tried re-enacting Kim's intent of taking pictures in the restroom, but we don't have a full mirror, but we do have a hook on the handicap stall door. I know I know, but I didn't have anyone else to help me!

My outfit consisted of so many things that I normally document on their own; beginning with this plaid top that you see. It's actually from Goodwill, so its one of my little monsters, but I use it too often to say its a burden in my wardrobe. Then these awesome Clubmaster sunglasses that are designed inspired from the 50s and 60s by Cole Haan!

So then I proceeded to take full body shots, one after another after another. these shots not only cut my feet, but approximately make me look like I am from the 80s, but they are also very out of focus. What was I expecting when I put my camera on top of my car with a ten second timer?

I then realized that I ran out of brown sock so therefore I was wearing the best polka dot socks ever from the Gap, but thankfully my dear son, Skipper was there to give me moral support for this shameful and very unsuccessful "photo shoot" specially after amazing pictures that Kendi, Tara, Carol, Kristina and Kristin take on a weekly basis. I on the other hand took about 40 and could only show about 5 because they were all not blogging material.

monsters in my closet part 2

So other than eating my feelings, I have another pretty bad habit; compulsively buying random pieces of clothing from second hand stores. As I explained to you in my first post , "monsters in my closet", I buy random used crap on a weekly basis, pardon my french!

I sure do feel proud to say that it has been over 3 weeks since I last went to a second hand store. Feeeewwf it felt good to say that out loud. Hi my name is Midory and I am a recoverring second hand store shopping addict! This is where you all say, Hi Midory!

But just because I have stopped doing this doesnt, mean that I don't have the most random pieces lingering in my closet. These pieces need attention, these pieces need my help, or maybe these pieces just need to be thrown away!

Well I introduce to you, a very colorful tunic blouse, that I have converted into a dress. Do to the fact that I am extremely short, I can get away with wearing some tops as dresses... On the other hand, I can't get away with this maxi dresses trend because it looks like I have wrapped myself in a blanket and have decided to go out wearing it.

Back to the monster; this tunic is from Charlotte Russe, circa atleast 5 years because it has the super old tag. I loved it because of the color, but since it's more of a tunic instead of a dress, I found myself having the hardest time pairing it up. Plus the empire waist on it makes me look like I am a seven year old heavy girl excited to hit a piñata and eat all the candy.

So as you can see the image above there are a lot of things wrong with this tunic; the chest area makes me look like I have awkward boobs, my tummy looks like I might be 5 months pregors (as I have indicated with the illustrative arrow), and neckline is only making it worse.

Another big issue with the tunic is the length. Since its a tunic the length is not suitable for my body type as a tunic. Its to short to be worn without something underneath, well you can but I don't think its work appropriate or public appropriate. See image below!

Do not try to adjust your screens, for the person in the image is taller than she appears. Please ignore the fact that I look extra short in these first pics... I strongly want to believe that it's the angle! or my photographer's great skills, hi Mandi I love you!

I guess in the end my strategy was solely based on creating a playful color combo, adding accessories and a belt to draw away the attention from both my mid area and the tunic length. I also thought that by adding this long necklace I can vertically create elongation. Help me ladies... What do you guys think?!

I fell in love with the idea of polka dots ever since I saw Kendi in this outfit. When I found out it was from J Crew I decided I needed to visit this certain store that everyone always talks about. I know that I must be some kind of an alien for never going in to J Crew, but I think I was intimidated by the financial aspect of the store, not the actual clothing.

Last Saturday I decided to take a trip to my local mall, Fashion Valley here in San Diego because I was bored. I happened to walk by J Crew, I kept walking and walking, and about 20 feet away from the store I decided to do a U-turn and take a glimpse. Best thing I could have ever done!

The clothing was amazing, the quality was fantastic, the prices were still a bit intimidating, but overall it was worth a look. Of course I was just minding my own business when this adorable personal shopper, Cindy, approached me and asked if I needed help. After releasing the biggest sigh of relief I said "Dear god yes!" I told her everything about my recent experiences with finding a dress that fits my torso and does not accentuate my stomach area.
All I can say was wow! She actually listened to my issues and did everything in her power to bring every piece that fit me and what sweater or belt would go with it! It was just so perfect and I left there feeling perfect myself. So if any of you ladies live in San Diego make sure you go in the store and ask for her because she is an angle and knows so much of what they carry!

One of the pieces that I purchased was this beautiful "Swirling Dots" navy dress which was so ironic because the reason why I originally went in there was because of a navy polka dot blouse! Even my main squeeze fell in love with this dress and said that it was perfect on me! My dog Skipper, aka Handsome, gave me an approval too!

One of the reasons why I bought this dress in a heartbeat is the endless possibilities of how I can style this! I had to pair it with my red wedges because it was sunny and it was about time they needed to be dusted!

Dont forget to check out my orange legs. It was my first attempt at sunless tanner lotion and I ended looking like an umpa lumpa.

As much as I wanted to dress up like a leprechaun today in honor of Saint Patricks Day, I refrained. To tell you the truth I actually don't have many "midori" items in my closet. Midori is actually the color green in Japanese. The reason why my name is Midory is because my grandfather, may her rest in peace, was Japanese. So I am Mexican-American-Japanese. Talk about being a mutt!

It is also a Mexican tradition that if you have the same name of a saint that is celebrated, you get to celebrate as well. So congratulations to me because my first name is Patricia. So congratulations to all you Patricks and Patricias out there. Special shout out to my dear mother because her name is Patricia as well! Hi mom!

I thought since it was such an important day, I should wear one of my most favorite pieces in my closet, my Sketched Danios dress. It's important because never in my life did I think I would get so excited about having a dress that had sketches of fish.

But how can I not? Plus isn't a fish symbol for good luck? Maybe I should wear this dress everyday because I kind of need it right now because work has been horribly busy.

A couple of weeks ago I was horribly and dangerously mesmorized by the sudden explosion of animalesque and colorful tribal prints that appeared in the February catalogue for my favorite store, Anthropologie.

My excitement for being expode to this new wave of colors, prints, and patterns was unexplicable. Maybe this will help you understand: Midory to colorful tribal pattern is like Hue Hefner to recently turned 18 year old girls. Helpful?

So then amament was followed by deception from realizing I had nothing like these pieces. My closet was and still is longing for every single piece in the new season, but both my wallet and my boyfriend are feeling the complete opposite.

Now what do I do? What I do best; Shop! I decided to buy a couple of pieces that had colors that I felt could work with what I do have in my closet. Coincidentally these two pieces work together.

So my first attempt to mimicking the idea of these looks deserves a C. After analysing my outfit, I realised that instead of doing subtle accent pieces, I went for bold such as the red instead of a camel brown or something more subtle. So I guess I will try that next time!

The good thing is that I love to challenge myself to mix and match so I am sure that I wouldnt mind trying over and over again till I get the perfect outfit! Till next time!

what men really think take 2

The first "what men really think" was not what I was expecting, but I think it was very eye opening in a hard and enlightening way!

Lately I have been spending a pretty good amount of money on clothes, I wont lie! 70% of my purchases are "necessities" and the other 30% were impulsive buys. In this case I feel like the De Chelly Dress was more of an impulsive buy! My wallet really can't afford any more impulses, and due to where I work and where I hang out, I won't be able to take advantage of that amazing dress as much as I would love to. I decided that I needed to return it.

So in order save time, gas, money, and tears I have decided that I shall punish and torture my boyfriend with a visit to Anthropologie. Thankfully, because he loves me, he agreed to come with.

There were many dresses that I thought would be a good variety to get his opinion on, but decided to choose three distinct dresses. The first dress is the Powdered Pigment Dress that I liked because it had so many colors and it has a beautiful back, which is not shown!

He had two positive things to say about it:
1. The fit of the dress flatters me very much specially in my waist area.
2. The lower creates the appearance of a nice elongated vertical line,
making me look slimmer.

He also had two negative things to say:
1. The washed out colors in the dress do not compliment my skin tone
(as you can see on the left lower corner picture)
2. He simply says "It doesn't make me thing wow!"

The second dress is the Take Action Dress that I adore!
If a dress was to be designed to fit my personality it would be this one.
I was really afraid to try this one on because of all the mixed reviews on how the fit was.

But I did it anyway, and this is the positive things my boyfriend had to say:
1. The color of the dress is amazing on my skin tone.
2. The personality of the dress suits me so much more.

And now for the negatives:
1. The proportions are all wrong on me specially in the torso area.
2. My chest being covered up so high does not compliment my body shape.
3. Cuts my body into separate portions, my upper part and my lower part
instead of creating a continuous silhouette.

My third and last dress I will be talking about is the Pom Flower Shift that
apparently my dear boyfriend really liked. He said that out of all the 8 dresses he likes
this one the most. Weird because once again it is the one I would never think of!

He had amazing comments about this one. From the style of the dress fitting my body
perfectly, to the fun pattern, bright colors, etc. The one incy wincy thing
Mister Picky had to point out was the beige at the bottom of my leg. He also
mentioned how the A-Line skirt portion does not hug my love handles.

In the end I actually did purchase the polka dot dress because
I feel I will try my best to make it work because I love it!
AND I am waiting for the Pom Flower one to go on sale so I can purchase it!
Wait did I say I needed to spend less?

Here's my outfit for this fine cloudy San Diego Friday. This outfit just makes me really happy. I just feel like me in it and I truly adore every single piece. For me, THIS is what fashion is about - expressing and projecting your inner self through clothes.

It warmed up just enough for me to be able to finally be able to wear my recent purchase, the Vitalize Blouse! Oh I'm so in love with it! I drooled over it for months waiting for it to go on sale - it was so worth the wait! The colors are one of my favorite combos, navy, red and mustard (with a bit of blue-gray thrown in for good measure) and just look at all the beautiful ruffles on it. Gorgeous!

Actually, I just realized, I'm wearing all Anthro today! That was totally not planned! These jeans are J. Brand jeans that I found in the sale section for only $30!! They're supposed to be ankle length but since I have short legs, they actually are the perfect length for me - so no hemming required - total score!

And these shoes ... *happy sigh*. Just look at them. Oh how I love these shoes. I drooled over these as well for a long time. I love me some colored shoes and you throw in a quilted pattern and a gorgeous heel and how could I resist? I tell ya, they had me from the start! It took a while to first figure out what size I needed (they run big - I'm usually a 8.5 but sized down to an 8) and then to actually find them! These were popular so tracking down my size was no easy task but I was determined. In addition to being beautiful, they're actually pretty comfortable, which can't be said about most 3.5 inch heels!

Anyway, I only work half days on Fridays so I'm eagerly looking forward to noon. I'll be heading to the mall to make some returns and uh ... of course no other purchases. ;) I hope you enjoy your Friday!

I'm pretty excited about this outfit! When I first bought this skirt, I envisioned it with a mustard colored top. I searched a little for one in just the right shade (I didn't want anything too bright) but wasn't finding what I was looking for. Then, the other day, I was digging through my closet looking for something else and found this top - I already owned it and it was just the shade I was looking for! It's like getting something new but without spending any money! Woo hoo! I had forgotten all about it - is that awful or what (please tell me I'm not the only one that does this). I also have it in a pretty olive green color. How did I forget about you two beautiful shirts? I promise to wear you more. Especially since you have pretty capiz shell buttons that match my capiz shell ring and earrings (which I forget to get a picture of).

White polka dots on navy fabric? Check! Red accents? Check! Awesomeness? Check! You would think that Clara and I called each other this morning to coordinate our outfits. Well I am sad to say that that did not happen. I, Midory, think Clara was peaking through my window this morning to see what I would wear because she wants to be like me... Well actually maybe the real reason behind our very similar outfits is that deep down inside I want to be like her!

This morning I was so excited with Clara's new series on her hgtv applied to fashion that I wanted to apply the techniques she spoke of. This beautiful San Diego morning I woke up wanting to challenge myself to try to mix neutrals (dark ones like the navy and brown) successfully. I don't have trouble with light neutrals, but I think I get scared of dark colors. I have no idea why, but I think they are dull! I know its wrong of me, but I am working on it.

I think the highlight of my outfit today is the polka dot dress. This is literally vintage and belonged to my friend's mother way back in the day. He is a dear friend of mine and his mother is an amazing woman, so to see that it is now in my hands means so much to me!

In the picture above I really wanted to shoe the contrast between the red Bianka top and the polka dot dress. It was wonderful and I was proud! :)

I fell in love with the idea of owning a pair of oxford shoes when I went to Milan, Italy about a year ago. There is nothing more beautiful than a good shoe and real Italian leather. BUT due to the fact that I did not have a million dollars to spend on a pair of shoes, I had to settle for these awesome shoes that Clara actually picked out for me! In love!

Hello! It's my (Clara) turn now!

Yes, I think these matchy outfits of ours prove that Midory and I spend way too much time together! I wish I had some amazing revelation or some reasoning behind this outfit, but I actually don't. I was having a bad morning, I was in a rush and grabbed things that I thought would work together. Yes, I'm a fashion blogger and I rarely plan ahead. But one thing sure stands out to me as I'm looking at my outfit now - all the things I grabbed are items in my closet that I truly love. Piece by piece, I adore each of these. After coming to Anthro too late to snag this Breezy Polkas cardigan, I searched all over for it and was lucky enough to have it sold to me, brand new, from a fellow Anthro lover over at the Effortless Anthropologie Trade Market. I still get a thrill every time I pull this cardigan out of the drawer - I can't believe it's finally mine! The beautiful dark navy color, the cute polka dot fabric, the feminine bow ... *happy sigh* The earrings are very special. They were given to me as a gift for being the maid of honor in my sisters wedding. Not that I needed any gift, but whenever I wear these, I remember how wonderfully special and joyous that day was. The top I'm wearing is a beloved, overworn shirt from Target years ago. It's 3/4 sleeve so it works for every season and it's basic enough to work a billion different ways. These pants are such a beautiful shade of grey (it has several different grays and white all in a subtle streaky pattern) that is so versatile. In fact, I ended up buying the whole set - pants, pencil skirt and blazer - I know it'll be a timeless collection in my wardrobe. The whole set is still over at the Limited here if you're interested. And finally, the shoes. ... oh these shoes ... just look at them:

Red .... sparkly .... what's not to love? These are from Me Too, one of my favorite brands! Their shoes are always simple and understated and comfortable. I have probably 8 pairs of this brand shoe in my closet.

Once again the weekend is over, but I am happy to say that today I am not at work. It was my main squeeze's birthday this weekend so we went out of town to celebrate with his parents.

Not only did I have a wonderful weekend full of resting, comfort, eating horrible amounts of cake, and a shopping trip to an Anthropologie close by. What more can a girl ask for?

It was a three day weekend where I really can't recall the last time I put shoes on, actually I have no idea where I took them off three days ago, hence the picture without shoes! I can't recall the last time we got the opportunity to enjoy each others company and watch useless tv.

This outfit is a combination of a lot of my favorite things: first my boyfriend's worn out leather belt from almost a decade ago. I do believe his pants are falling off right now as we speak because he didn't know I was wearing it!

hgtv applied to fashion: mixing neutrals

I'm a big fan of HGTV, always have been. I love everything about homes - deciding on one to buy, remodeling, choosing fixtures, choosing paints, decorating, you name it, I'm into it! I've been watching design shows for years, picking up tips and information and adding them to my memory for when it's my turn to own my first home.

It occurred to me last year that if I thought certain interior design tips applied well to decorating a room, why couldn't I apply those same tips to my outfits? I starting using all the tricks that I could remember and have really enjoyed my results! I decided to start a regular series here on the blog showing you the little ways that I apply HGTV tips to help create my own personal fashion style!

Up first is something I've been talking about a lot lately - mixing neutrals (like my new recent favorite combo, gray and brown) - it's really the number one favorite technique that I've taken from HGTV and applied heavily to my personal style and my outfits.

From HGTV, I have learned that mixing neutrals creates a timeless space that is calming and gender neutral. Also, in the absence of color, patterns, textures and shapes become focal points.

Here are some examples of mixed neutral rooms:

This room mixes several shades of gray and brown as well as a little black. What jumps out at me are shapes in the bookcase, the textures of the couches and the grains in the coffee tables.

This room beautifully blends a charcoal gray, a little black, beige and both milk and dark chocolate brown. With all the furniture and walls being neutral, my eye is drawn to the accessories in the room - the patterned rug, the dining room light fixture and the decorative pieces.

I think this picture is my favorite - it has two shades of brown (the dresser and wall paint), 3 shades of gray (the headboard, curtains and coverlet) as well as bright crisp whites (sheets and coral) and a creamy beige (lamp shade). Among the dark colors and multitude of heavy textures, my eye is drawn immediately to the clean, crisp white sheets.

Some examples of how I have applied the mixing neutrals technique to my own outfits are:

Here I've mixed gray, beige and cognac brown. With little color in this outfit, my eye is drawn immediately to the pattern in the dress and the shiny, repetitive eyelets in my belt.

In this outfit, I'm mixing tons of neutrals - brown, black, white and gray! There are other colors but my eye is drawn to the textural differences - the tweed skirt, the patterned and textured top and the smooth fuzzy cardigan.

With only black, beige, cognac brown and a little bit of dark olive green, I wanted to emphasize, like in the first photo, the pattern of this dress.

From only three outfits, I think it's quite evident how much this one basic technique has influenced my own personal style. I love neutrals. I love how they pair with each other and with other colors (and if done in the right way, neutrals can actually become colors). And I love that by combining only neutrals, I can feature textures and patterns making the focal point of my outfit different every time!

There's something very exciting about this skirt! It's from a very small pile of clothes that I kept after trying on everything in my closet last year. The items in this pile are "love them, know they have timeless styling, can nearly fit in them" pieces. That means that in May 2010, this skirt didn't quite fit and look, here in February 2011, it does fit! Yay! So of course I had to wear it immediately! Here is my best attempt at dressing down a tweed, lace skirt and making it work appropriate. This seriously took probably 10 tries. It's hard dressing down lace! Everything I reached for just made it too much and not work appropriate. Black cardigan - too formal... pearls - too fancy ... nice pumps - too dressy ... you get the idea. I think a white button up and blazer would have been good too but I haven't found that perfect, isn't-see-through, doesn't-gape-at-the-breasts white button up yet.

Isn't this lace beautiful? I just love it! And I've always been a fan of tweed ... throw in some pleats for good measure and *happy sigh*.

Of course, the usual gratuitous shoe shot. I love the Victorian details in these shoes and boy are they comfy! I think they finished off this outfit perfectly, making it just nice enough without being overly feminine or dressy.

monsters in my closet

Friday is my favorite day of the week. Not just because the weekend begins or because I get out before noon, but because it's the day I get to run around and cause some trouble. I have adapted the following routine to my week for almost two years now.

1. Going to starbucks and getting some coffee.
2. Talking about my feelings with my therapist.

3. Stopping at my local Anthropologie for a dose of retail therapy.

4. Crying about amount spent at Anthropologie.

5. Continuing a cheaper form of retail therapy at Goodwill or second hand stores.

6. Leaving Goodwill or the second hand stores with atleast one thing.
7. Resenting all my purchases.

So in a year there is 365 days, 52 weeks, and guess-timating around 51 Fridays. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a lot of second hand pieces in my closet that probably require attention.

Here is where you will be helping me. I will dig deap in to my closet and start picking out some of these pieces and challenge myself to make it work with an outfit. I will report back to you ladies with my successful/unsuccessful results. If unsuccessful, I will say goodbye to it.

This is my first midory vs monster attempt. I got this taupe looking "silk" top at the Salvation Army because I loved the detailing of it. I know what you are thinking... Did this picture get widened? Or is it morphed? No... That is how wide to top is.

Attempt 1-7 failed miserably making this morning's outfit attempt number 8. Not only was I able to incorporate this pretty unflattering second hand piece to my outfit, but the belt, the blue coat, and the brown top are also from Goodwill. I guess I wanted to make this challenge even harder for myself by making most of my outfit with little monsters.

Should it stay or should it go? This is a difficult one!

This OOTD features two pieces from my wardrobe that I absolutely adore - the Anthropologie Cordial Embrace Dress and the J.Crew Buffalo Check Boy Shirt.

This dress is one that I had my eye on for ages at Anthropologie. It wasn't very popular, so I held out for it to go on second mark-down and then I snatched it up! I think most people were put-off by the extra sash of fabric flowing down the middle, but I loved it as well as the cut and color. It's been really cold (and windy too, if you can't tell by the "windblown" hairdo I've got going on) here lately in "sunny" San Diego, so I'm happy to get at least one more wear out of it before spring. I love that this dress is so versatile - wear something under it, over it or by itself - belt or no belt - and the charcoal grey goes with so many different colors! I was, of course, bent on pairing this gray dress with a brown belt and tights. But I didn't have a brown belt that was the right width so I pulled out this black one. I still think it would have been a better outfit with brown accents, but this works for now!

As for this shirt, it is a new to my wardrobe. I've been trying to incorporate more button-ups into my wardrobe. In the past, I have not been a fan since almost all of them gape at the bust area on me but I really have seen their versatility on other bloggers so I'm bound and determined to find some that work for me! After seeing the blue version of this shirt being worn a billion different ways by Kendi, when I saw it in the sale section of my local J.Crew, I knew I had give it a try. I love the vibrant orange, the 100% cotton fabric has the right blend of structure and softness and there is zero gaping at the bust! In fact, I love this shirt so much, I went searching online for other colors in my size but the only other one I could find was pink so expect for that one to be getting some OOTD love soon!

I didn't take the usual gratuitous shoe photo since I think you've seen these enough by now, but I thought I'd mention yet another thing that I love about these shoes. Here you'll see they look like a color (matching the orange tones in my shirt), just like they do when I wear them with black or other dark colors. But in other outfits, they play the part of the unassuming neutral, letting the more vibrant colors pop forward. This, my friends, is why I'm always happy to add more cognac colored shoes to my wardrobe - do you want a neutral or color today? One shoe gives you both options!

ootd: a dress with a story

This outfit of the day comes with a long story; I hope you're up for it!

Although I know many people do, I'm not really one to attach significance or memory to clothes. However, this dress is definitely a symbolic piece in my wardrobe.

Back in June 2010, Hubby and I moved from the metro-DC area (the Maryland side) to San Diego. My wardrobe was in a weird place ... I was in a weird place. My closet was full of things that didn't fit due to my weight gains and I felt that the items in it did not reflect me or my style.

See, I grew up being thin, I was size 5 or 7 all through my teenage years and through my freshman year of college. The second half of my sophomore semester, I began to put on weight and it didn't stop until I reached a size 12 ... and actually, I was a size 14 for a little bit too. So yeah, my closet contained every size from 5 to 14. I didn't know how to dress this new body or what looked good on it. Through the years (I was 19 my sophomore year of college, and I was 27 when we moved), there was a lot of change: my style, my body size/shape, my budget, my wardrobe needs, etc. I tried to roll with the punches but I think towards the end, all I was really looking for in clothes were two things: 1) fitting within my budget and 2) being able to fit in the clothes - meaning not necessarily looking at whether the clothes suited my body but just that I could get them physically onto my body.

Before the move, I literally tried on every piece of clothing I owned and got rid of a TON of stuff (even Hubby was impressed). I was letting go of all of the clothes that I had kept in hopes of "fitting back into it one day" (we've all been there right?). It was hard at first, but then it got really liberating. I was beginning to accept my body as it was. Right then. Right now. Not what it was/should/could be. But again, as I was trying all these clothes, I was really only looking for things that fit onto my body and purged anything too tight or too baggy. I wasn't looking for what actually looked good on me or what I felt good in.

When we moved to San Diego and I hired for my new job in September, I looked at my wardrobe and knew I had to do something. My old job in Maryland didn't require a professional wardrobe at all and while my new office was still only business casual, I knew the contents of my closet weren't going to cut it. And really, I wanted to present myself better. So, I went shopping ... and then I did more shopping ... and uh ... a little more. I was trying on a lot of clothes, trying to figure out my style and what looked good on my no hips, big bust, tummy pooch, love handled, rectangular, apple-shaped body. There. I've said it. So now my flaws and my size are all out in the open.

Anyway, what does all this have to do with this dress? Well, in my wanderings of the malls, I walked past Anthropologie and remembered how I had really liked the stores style when I had been there before but that I had never shopped there before thinking a)it was way beyond my budget and b)nothing there would look good on - or even fit - my sized body. But I figured I'd give it a shot because this was my time to discover and learn. So, I walked into the store and beelined for the sale section. I figured I'd combat my previous issues by only looking at things that I could afford and figure out the style/fit thing in the dressing room ... alone and away from gazing eyes. I grabbed a few things, including this dress and headed to the dressing room. Imagine my surprise when I walked out of there that day with two dresses. I still remember feeling really happy that day as I walked out of Anthropologie. I had found not just one, but two pieces that I felt really good in, thought represented my style and that I thought fit me well. Ever since then, I have been a regular shopper of Anthropologie's sale section. I still can't afford to buy most things at full price, but I am happy to wait patiently for sales so I can build my wardrobe right this time.

So yes, this dress is symbolic. When I wear this dress, it reminds me of the beginning of MY wardrobe ... clothes that fit ... clothes I can afford ... and, most importantly, clothes that I feel good in (... or to be grammatically correct, clothes in which I feel good :-D).

ummm... not convinced at all! I feel like my combo is soooo generic! hahahah is that weird? I have over done it! The dress is so beautiful alone, that the jacket or any cardigan that I should pair it with should not call too much attention. In this case the jacket is so bright that I have derived all the attention away from the dress. So this outfit to me is a fail!

When I am not feeling an outfit, I will make a semi-fake smile! When I am happy with it, my smile will take over a picture. Although the color palette is not bad, I think I need to try something different with this! Maybe coffee didn't kick in on time? Ladies what would you pair this with?

I actually really wanted to get Clara's opinion on this dress. She disagrees with me. This is what she had to say: "The dress is beautiful but it doesn't have to be the focus everything you wear it. Make it the focus next time. Today its' complimenting the jacket. I think it looks like you have more pieces just by changing the focus."

Am I crazy then? Or simply too harsh and a perfectionist?

Happy new week ladies! I hope you all had a wonderfull weekend! After my emotional first attempt at "What Men Really Think" I was on a new mission. My mission was going to be to get my proportions correct and to make it as cute as possible! How can I make it cute you ask? By also challenging myself to mix and match as well! I must say that 50% of the time I am successful with both missions, but I think I am proud of this outfit.

I noticed that I dont tuck my shirts in as much as maybe I should be. One of the things that I learned from What Not To Wear was that the more proportioned your torso looks, the slimmer you look. Many of the short women that had makeovers on that show were taught 1. buy pants that were tailored and 2. to not wear tops too long because the proportions of your actual body will look incorrect. I paid much attention to those words of advice when putting together this outfit. Check out Clara's Candy Striper outfit below! :)

Midory says I look like a candy-striper, a coworker says I look patriotic (of course it's a guy and he mistakes the salmon colored stripes in my shirt for red) and me ... well, I think I was channeling Hubby's Brooks Brothers catalogs when I got dressed. Whatever the case, I'm professional, comfortable and warm, so what else is needed on a chilly San Diegan day at work? Yes, at work ... on Presidents Day. So much for a holiday - even Google didn't commemorate the day with it's usual holiday logos. Yes, Google acknowledges Valentines Day, but not Presidents Day. Go figure. Okay, anyway, sorry, back to our regularly scheduled program ...

I love vertical striped anything. I think vertical stripes give the optical illusion of making me look taller (I'm 5'4") and leaner. And the fact that I picked up vertical striped J.Crew button-up at a thrift store for around $10 makes it an even better deal! And check out the details on this scarf - it has a soft linen texture and has a nicely embroidered edge. I thought it added the perfect feminine touch to the otherwise masculine button-up-and-pant outfit.

And, of course, the gratuitous shoe shot. I love these shoes. They're Bandolino Berrys in a cracked iridescent silver color. They're not too high (about a 2-inch heel), pretty comfortable and they go with everything! They are my go-to work shoe.

Has it been scientifically proven that men are from mars and women are from venus? Because we have stories of our significant others that might help scientists as evidence to prove that it's true!

Like any other relationships, we have our differences with our men, including clothing. We want to introduce to you the first post of our "what men really think" series.

Our intention is to include the reviews, on a word to word basis, from our men regarding our outfits. Every women in this world likes to get a man's approval on the way they look. But I think both Clara and myself have been blessed with opinionated men who will tell us exactly how it is even if we don't ask for it, or so I think.

With Clara's and I successful purchases this week, I felt like I had so many great finds to show my boyfriend.

One of the purchases was this dress from Anthropologie. It is called the De Chelly Dress by Maeve. I bought this dress believing that my boyfriend Paul would love it on me, but boy was I wrong. I think that it was the deadly combination of hormones, menstrual bloating, and brutal honesty that left me crying after hearing what he thought.

I figured that shying away from his opinion would once again defeat the purpose of what we want to accomplish with this blog. First picture I introduce you the reason why my boyfriend says this dress does not fit my body. I must warn you!

You can see how this dress does not compliment my back nor my love handles, which devastated me because when I tried it on in the store, I felt lovely in it, but I do agree with him.

Paul: Immediately I don't like it. The waist is hitting directly under your love handles calling and the attention towards that area.
Me: But do you think I can fix it by putting a cardigan or a jacket on.
Paul: You can but the fit is all wrong for you. You need something that will just flow from your waist down, not puff out.
Me: (Insert the crying hysterically here).
Paul: See this is why I didn't think that you getting my opinion would be a good idea. I don't want to do any more reviews today.

The following pictures are me trying to attempt pairing up the dress with a fake smile, a jacket, and a bite of chocolate.

And after much tossing and turning on this dress I have decided to keep it. Because there will be people who won't like my style or wont like what I am wearing, but at the end of the day how I feel is what's important! His opinion is worth something, but not everything.

It is finally Friday and both Clara and myself have had some crazy week. But I wanted to be able to start my half day Friday with a great attitude and high hopes for an even better weekend!

Thankfully Friday's at work are casual, but lately I find myself wearing these miracle jeggings that I got from Forever 21 every single casual day. Today I wanted to mix it up and play with my red Bianka top from Anthropologie that I recently purchased! I didn't want to play it safe and just pair it up with jeans specially because I am not sure which jeans fit me right now.

I was totally inspired to buy this top because I first saw it on my fellow blogged "If I were a Rich Mom" here and just loved how it looked on her. I also noticed that so many girls were going crazy over this top and never really understood why. But boy was I proven wrong! There are so many great things about this top that is making me want to run and get it in every color; from the comfort, to the quality, and the details. So if you see it Anthropologie make sure to try on it!

It is now the end of the day and so far I got a lot of really nice compliments from many people, so I really wanted to share this outfit with you no matter how late it is! I hope you enjoy!

Okay, so the first thing that has to be said is that I found last these J Brand jeans last December at Anthro on sale for only $30!! I guess that's not as great as Midorys $10 Elevesense pants, but I still think it's pretty good! They were a total surprise find and I'm really happy with them. I have a bit of a tummy and no hips so sometimes it's pretty hard finding jeans/pants that look good on me and fit me well.

So here we go, my first ever blazer look! I'm still not entirely sure that it works, but both Hubby and Midory approved, so I think I'll take the risk. I'm not really one for mixing patterns so even though the "pattern" in the blazer is subtle, it's still out of my comfort zone. None the less, I'm going to own the look and rock it. It helps that this blazer is really soft and comfortable.

And check out this scarf. I really love this scarf ... and that's saying something because I have well over 50 scarves. Yes, you read that right ... over 50. And the worst part is that I can't even say that they were acquired gradually over lots of time ... nope. I got into a scarf phase and bought them all over the course of a year or so. But out of them all, this one here has probably gotten the most wear. I love that I can take any plain, boring jeans and tee outfit, throw on this nice big scarf and instantly add some texture and pattern (and apparently I can throw on a blazer too). I always feel so chic and fashionable when I have on this scarf and it's warm and really soft to boot!

Speaking of boots, check out these cuties. I love the little twist/tie on them, it gives them a bit of character - and I really love a good cognac shoe. I think the color is the most versatile of all shoe colors. It blends nicely with brown, adds pop and contrast to black and compliments so many other colors. If you haven't noticed yet, I have this color in several types of shoe - tall boots, mary janes and these ankle boots. Next, I think I need a pair of cognac flats ... and sandals ... and I'm still on the look-out for the perfect cognac purse ... then maybe I'll stop. ;)

As Midory mentioned, we both ran out to - not just one - but both San Diego Anthropologies Tuesday night for the big sale! I had a couple things that I wanted to get and found a couple of extra surprise goodies too! Aren't surprise finds just the best?

First up on my list to buy was the Vitalize Blouse. One of my favorite color combinations is navy, red and yellow so when I spotted this shirt in the store back in December, I fell in love with it! I tried it on in my usual size 12 and found it to be grossly oversized! Long story short, I sized all the way down to a size 4! Can you believe it? I don't think I've ever had a size 4 anything in my closet! Talk about running large! While I loved it, I didn't see this as being a very versatile piece so I couldn't justify the original $68 price tag. It was hard to hold out for it to go sale, but I was able to do so and snagged it at nearly $30 off the original price. Score!

The other piece that I just knew that I had to find was the To A Tee Blazer. On a rare occasion a few months ago, I was able to convince Hubby to go into an Anthropologie with me at UTC while I tried on a couple of things. Imagine my surprise when he walks over with this blazer and said that it was nice. I tried it on, and he was right! The color is gorgeous and looked good with my skin tone. The fit was great - the two button blazer totally cinched me in at the smallest part of my waist and gives my rectangular body some shape. Even though the fit is good, it isn't exactly roomy. I can wear this with a nice shell or other thin shirt underneath, but definitely not anything too thick. But I guess that's okay for San Diego weather! All that said, since I don't find myself reaching for blazers very much (I'm more of a cardigan girl), I couldn't justify the original price so I decided to hold out for the sale. I'm really happy that I was able to grab the only size large left in either UTC or Fashion Valley! Since Hubby actually took the time and energy to pick out something nice for me, I felt that this was a necessary piece. Does anyone have any blazer outfit inspirations to share? :)

Now this shirt was a pleasant surprise! I have been needing some plain, versatile, fitted-tee type tops and this Ripple Ridge Henley fit the bill - and a size medium fit perfectly! And for only $30? Done! I don't know why I haven't noticed this top before it went on sale. UTC only had the grey color in my size so I snatched it up and hoped that Fashion Valley would have more options. I tried on the green which just wasn't a color I loved. I'm not really a green fan so I'm very selective about the shades that I like. I also tried on the yellow in a large and found that the color just didn't do anything for me. I hoped for purple but there wasn't a single one around. I called CS yesterday and set up a charge-send for a one so hopefully that will pan out! I'm really excited about this shirt! I think it'll be so versatile - with jeans for errands or weekend fun, with dress pants or a nice skirt for work, under a blazer, under a cardigan, with a nice delicate necklace, with a long chunky necklace ... the possibilities are endless! If this came in even more colors, I'd try them all! I think the ruched scoop neck is feminine and leaves room for plenty of necklace types while the slub cotton texture adds nice visual appeal and a bit of casualness (is that a word?).

Finally, another fun surprise was these Perfectly Plaid Tights. They were sitting all alone in a basket in the back sale room of the Fashion Valley Anthro just waiting for me to come along! I've had a thing recently for textured tights so I guess patterned tights are the next logical step. For only $10, I thought these beauties deserved a try. I have a rust colored dress that is similar to the orangy stripe running across these so I think that'll be my first pairing!

I'm so excited about my Sale Day finds! I can't wait to featuring them in some upcoming OOTDs! *Happy Sigh* Does anyone else think that Anthro Sale Day should be a holiday? :)

Happy Wednesday ladies! I am in the best mood because Clara and I had a fantastic shopping day yesterday at two different Anthropologie stores here in San Diego. Not only because of the sales, but also because I got to see Carol from "In Pursuit of Pretty Things". I have never had the chance to meet her but we are both HUGE fans of their blog. But hopefully next time I will go say hi and introduce myself. Maybe one day we will even go shopping together!

The reason why I had such a great shopping day was because I found dresses that made me feel beautiful no matter what my weight was. I gave in to dresses I had heard of but not considered. Including the De Chelly dress, the Off the Beat Dress (which Clara has and I thought it was blah!), the Seaside Field Dress, etc etc etc. My wallet burned a bit, but it was far beyond worth it.

Actually my outfit today has an unexpected purchase: the famous and sold out gold Field Skirt from Anthropologie. I didn't know what all the hype was about, till I tried it on. I LOVE IT! I thought that I was going to look like a girl that was about to hit a piñata. But now I kind of don't care if I still look like that because this skirt is just perfect.

For a second I was going to avoid posting pictures of myself this week due to eating out every single day this past week. But I think that by me not posting because I am in my "heavier days" defeats the purpose of this blog.

This is the perfect example of this life long struggle I have had with my body; I am sensitive to sodium. I am not allergic, but I get a reaction where I swell up. I can fluctuate up to two sizes from one day to another. I try hard to limit myself from eating out and eating only a small amount of preservatives and salt in my home cooked meals.

Because of this fluctuation, its hard for me to have skirts and pants that can fit me in both instances unless they have elastic waists (Amen for elastic waists!). So my mission has been to find dresses that can accomodate these horrific instances!

I first saw this Refined Rugby Dress from Anthropologie on Maria from "Infinite Whimsy" here. The majority of the reviews on the website say that the fit is off or that the top portion is too short. FINALLY!!!! hahahah this is what I need. More dresses that are smaller on the top for my short torso. I am very happy with it, except for the bow. It curls up and does not stay open, so I have found myself trying to fix it over 20 times today. I will have to switch up the belt situation! This will be fun! Send me some ideas of how I can pair up this dress. Check out Clara's

Okay, first of all, everyone pretend that I remembered to tuck in my shirt so I don't look so disheveled. I'm posting this OOTD in spite of the shirt mishap because I just love this outfit so much! Both the skirt and top came from The Limited and while they are not pieces that I would have ever picked to go together on my own, I saw the combo on a mannequin and loved it! I can't tell you how many times I've worn this top and skirt combination with various shoes, cardigans (the one today is a favorite from Anthropologie) and tights. I just can't get enough!

If you had talked to me a year ago, I would have told you that I would never pair brown and black together but look - black, brown (well, cognac is pictured here but there is more brown in the shirt elsewhere) and even gray all together and doesn't it look beautiful! I have to admit, brown and gray is now one of my favorite combinations!

And finally, a gratuitous shoe shot ... just because I love them so. These are the Anthropologie Hidden Sun Mary Janes in caramel/cognac. I gotta tell you, I just LOVE these shoes. They took a while to break in but they are so worth it because they a) go with everything, b) are comfortable (well, once you break them in) and c) are just so cute!

p.s. DSW has theses shoes (as well as the teal and black colors) right now at the bargain bin price of only $70!

I am pretty sure that most of you have heard of this amazing blog called "Effortless Anthropologie". Roxy, the creator of this blog, has dedicated so much time in building a wonderful community

This week Roxy allowed followers and readers to share stories of things they loved, hence the name of the posts "Tales of Things You Love Day-5".

Roxy was wonderful enough to post my entry, which was a huge honor for me because I know that there are so many beautiful women out there out with stories that are probably better than mine! But thankfully Roxy gave me the opportunity to share with her community and now I will share with ours.

I love to make a difference.

I grew up doing community service ever since I was 11. From missionary work in Mexico to volunteering every week at orphanages in Tijuana, to putting together a play for raising money for the poor and even selling pies. You know what the most ironic part of this whole experience was; that my family was poor in Tijuana. Having been evicted from multiple homes and having to wear hand me downs throughout the majority of my childhood only motivated me to help kids not go through the same dismay.

Ten years later, in Architecture School, I was presented with a yearlong thesis assignment of designing anything I wanted. When I mean anything I mean anything! You dedicate your blood, sweat and tears, and shopping for a whole year! I know how dreadful, specially the shopping part. For the longest time I asked myself "what should I design?" Where should I make the coolest new mall? But then my questions sounded more like; Who should I help? How can I make a difference?

I decided to design an after school facility for children in an impoverished neighborhood in Tijuana. I wanted to design for kids, not just because they lived in poor areas, but because a child's development is so highly impacted by their surroundings and their environment. Learning and designing for children in need, made me feel like a little kid all over again. I would see myself as that 11 year old selling pies on a busy street in Tijuana. But at the end of the day I wasn't a little kid anymore, I was far from it. I was a grown up finding herself one more time but now through her profession.

Everyday I wake up with a smile because even as an architect I was able to create a solution that can make a difference in an area that was in need, how can I not love that?

Have you ever arrived at a party late only to have a really good time and kick yourself for not having gotten there sooner?

I feel that way about Anthropologie.

I have loved Anthropologie's style for over 5 years but until last winter, I had only made one purchase (the Tomgirl Dress) because I felt, and probably rightly so, that I couldn't afford it. But last fall I really went through some growth (which I will discuss at some point in a later post) and I really started thinking about having a working wardrobe, quality vs quantity and cost-per-wear. It was then that I started really actively shopping at Anthropologie for the first time. I drool over their catalogs, obsessively check on the website and constantly peruse the nearby stores. While I love most of their current offerings, I am actually sad about some of the pieces I missed (Two Wheeler Dress, Tick-Tock Cardigan, Southward Stop Shirtdress, Two Paths Trench and Lost Time Skirt, for example) so I'm always on the look-out for good substitutes. Whenever I spot anything Anthropologie-ish, even if it's not something I am actually pining for, I get kind of excited and feel triumphant. Yes, I know I'm weird ... but life's all about the little things, right? I thought I'd share my findings with you in case you missed out on any of these goodies as well!

If someone had told me 6 months ago that I'd be writing a fashion blog, I would have laughed. But here I am posting an Outfit Of The Day. So here goes ...

I gotta tell you - I LOVE this dress. I think the fit is fantastic. It hugs down to the smallest part of my waist and then flows effortlessly away from that point to cover any little tummy troubles. And having the pattern the same overall minimizes my generous bust. (In fact, I like this dress so much that I am still looking for the blue motif version if anyone sees it!) I have worn this dress several times since I bought it a couple months ago and each time has been completely different and fun in it's own way. The basic colors and concentrated pattern really allow this dress to match a lot of different colors and styles. This time I decided I wanted to keep the other colors I paired it with mostly neutral so it would bring out the pattern in the dress. I paired it with a jacket that I bought on a whim. Usually when I buy pieces from Anthropologie, they're ones I've lusted over and watched for a while, but when I saw this cute little cropped jacket on the sale rack, I fell in love with the color and had to get it! I didn't think I'd like the fact that it is cropped, but it works great with dresses!

I have to be honest, my outfit of the day isn't exactly the best one, nor did I think I would be posting something today, but I am wearing the most awesome and important pants in my closet. And I think these pants are worth talking about!

This is the first pair of pants that I officially bought with my new mentality of buying for my current body, not my future skinny body. I had a horrible and expensive tendency of going shopping on only my skinny days. Thankfully today I don't think that way, atleast I dont want to.

I believe these pants were purchased on Clara's and I first shopping date. She had a big influence on this purchse because she told me that these pants looked great on me. Plus these pants were $9.99 Elevesense pants from Anthropologie (maybe that was what convinced me more!).

At first I was confused because this was the first pair that were not skin tight and that were actually my size. So ladies I introduce to you the "Life Changing Pants"! Alright maybe not the life changing pants, but the "Wardrobe Changing Pants"!

Now about the actual fit; these are a size 4, when I normally purchased a size 2. The fit is perfect for my body for different reasons. 1.) the length makes my legs look extra long, which is hard to accomplish when you are 4'10". 2.) the thick waistband successfully hides my love handles and accentuates the smaller part of my waist.

P.S. Please don't pay attention to the horrible frizz in my hair! I didnt have time to comb it!

why we are shopping for two

We are just two friends trying to dress our not-industry-standard bodies. Join us for our journey.

Here's a little bit about Clara:
Hi! I'm Clara. I'm the girl in the corner who doesn't say much at first until you get to know me. Then I'm like Donkey from the Shrek movies - "It's getting him to shut up that's the trick!" In my spare time, aside from shopping, I love to cook (and eat), read and papercraft - mostly creating mini scrapbooks and cards. I have an offbeat sense of humor and am bluntly honest. I have been married 5 years and have moved too many times.

I am 5'4", wear a size 10 or 12 in pants and dresses and a Medium or Large in tops. I am a true apple shaped girl! My trouble spots are the tummy area, a short torso and a lack of hips. I love dresses with pockets and anything with bows, stars, polka dots or paisleys. My favorite colors for clothes are red, orange, yellow, teal, turquoise, navy, purple, gray, brown and black.

Midory and I met in September of 2010 and we hit it off right away. We bonded over our love of good clothes, good shoes and good food. We love to shop together to help find sizes, get each others opinions and to have fun but whether we're together or not, we always keep our eyes peeled for things the other would like. So I guess you could say, we're always shopping for two!

Here's a little bit about Midory:
I, Midory, am a little fire cracker. My height is as tall as a third grader (4'10") but my heart is as big as my shoe collection. I come from a family full of short women who eat their feelings. And may I say that I am guilty as charged! I am also at a point in my life where I have a full time job sitting in front of a computer with zero physical activity in my day. These last two years I have noticed that my body has been affected by this and the changes are starting to hit. One day when I couldn’t find anything to wear because nothing was fitting me, I panicked, cried for a couple of hours, ate some chocolate, and probably watched an episode of the Bachelor (I know horrible!) I finally calmed down and realized that this is just a normal part in life and that there is a 99% possibility that my pants from when I was 18 won’t fit me ever again. And today I am fine with that. I have recently cleaned out more than three quarters of my closet and have been exploring as much as possible with what works with my body. That’s why we are here.

My sizes range anywhere from 2 to 6 depending on the brand. The tops are either small or medium (preferably a medium). My most troubled area is my stomach because I have love handles. I also have a short torso and many brands design for longer torsos and taller people. I need to shop at Gap Kids in order to get the height right!

One of the fun things about our shopping adventures is that Clara doesn’t hold back when giving me feedback.

I think both Clara and my style vary in many ways. Although we purchase many similar things, our outcomes are very different. For me the more color the better! I hate wearing black even though I have a good amount of black pieces in my closet. I refuse to use them when there are so many endless possibilities when combining beautiful rich colors in my closet. I think being from Mexico has such a big impact on my love for patterns, textures, and colors. I grew up in a pink house, what more can I say? Oh and since English is not my first language, please excuse the following: run-on sentences, Grammatical errors, Lack of punctuations and making up words!

Oh I am also the most easily amused person in this world. An example: yesterday I found myself at a dog supply store in the toy section laughing for five minutes at this big sheep that made a funny noise. My boyfriend looked at me with the most confused face and started to walk away. And even my dog gave me a “you’re pathetic” look…. That is me in a nut shell.
